Praising the Bar

lindeys.jpgColumbus restaurants want you.  And a local powerhouse just increased, er, make that lowered, the steaks…

Today, Lindey’s Restaurant & Bar (click on link) in German Village officially debuts a new value menu aimed squarely at your wallet (and in a very good way).

The Bar Menu, along with a new specialty drink menu, will be offered daily at the restaurant’s famous bar from 4:30 to 6:30 PM and from 9 to 11 PM on Thursdays and 10 PM to Midnight on Saturdays.

Menu items include the Gigantic Meatball for $5, All American Burger for $3, Slice of Lindey’s (cheese or pepperoni) for $1, Lindenhuaf Chips for $1, Beef in a Box (charred rib eye with Asian slaw) for $5, and Micro Crab Cakes for $5.  The drink menu features a Goombay Smash, Tony’s Famous Lemon Drop, and the Liquid Carrot Cake dessert martini, to name just a few.

Even better, Lindey’s bar will offer significant drink discounts during the “happy” hours of 4:30 to 6:30 PM.

In other value news, Dine Originals Columbus kicks-off restaurant week (click on link) today with amazing fixed-price menus at 42 of Central Ohio’s favorite dining establishments.  Think 3-course tasting menus for either $15 or $30.

Move over Ronald, value menus have never tasted so good in Columbus.

What a Card

someecard.jpgLife has classic moments.  And many of them should be shared.

Fortunately, someecards has a card for virtually every occasion.  Lent?  Yep.  Breakups? Covered.  Being a bad ass.  Sure…

The site has a Facebook application and a place to create your own card.  If the editors like it, you could be published.  What a great reason to send a congratulatory card…

Be prepared to laugh at someecards.com (click on link).

BenevoLance

pelotonia.jpgEver dreamt of crossing the finish line of a big race to a cheering crowd on your trusty Trek?  Well, you have to wait just 190 days until your dream can become a reality.

This August, Columbus welcomes the first annual Pelotonia event, a grass roots bike race with one goal - to end cancer.

Participants, family and friends will  enjoy a kick-off event in Columbus on Friday, August 28th.  Then, early on Saturday, August 29th, the bikers gear up and head for the hills of Southeast Ohio.

Riders have the opportunity to choose from three different biking experiences - a one-day 50-mile route, a one-day 100-mile route to Athens, and a two-day 180-mile route to Athens and back.  Depending on the length of the ride, participants pledge to raise between $1,000 and $2,000 for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

Thanks to an exceedingly generous gift from NetJets, 100% of the funds raised by racers will go directly to cancer research.

The name comes from “peloton.” a cycling term used to describe a pack of riders who benefit from working together as a group.   So recruit some friends and be like Lance - all for a great cause.

Visit pelotonia.org (click on link) for complete details.  Also, follow Pelotonia on Twitter and become a Pelotonia fan on Facebook.

The Hole Story

donut.jpgWhat do you get when you combine creativity, a sweet tooth and a newly vacant space?  German Village’s newest donut shop.

Started by two sisters, Belle’s Homemade opened this past weekend in the old Bakery Gingham location and carries a variety of homemade donuts, cookies, and hand-rolled caramels.  Yesterday, selections included six varieties of donuts, toffee chunk cookies, iced sugar cookies, caramel rolls and more.

Donuts are made fresh each morning at the duo’s off-site bakery, then delivered to the shop each morning by 8AM.  And since each day’s supply is limited (they stay open until sold out), special orders are encouraged.

Belle’s Homemade, 900 Mohawk Street, Columbus, OH (German Village).  614-607-1506.

Wise Guys

fiveguys.jpgThe burger establishments in Columbus better take notice - there is a new guy in town.  Make that Five Guys.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, the much-hyped burger institution originally from DC, recently opened its first Central Ohio location on Polaris Parkway.  Like all Five Guys, the restaurant serves burgers, hot dogs, grilled cheese or veggie sandwiches and two types of fries.

Everything in the place, including the 16 complimentary toppings, is fresh - we hear the restaurant does not even own a freezer.  Visitors during the peak lunch hours might find a line almost out the door, but don’t flip out, the guys behind the counter work like a well-greased machine.  They’ll deliver a monstrous burger to you in no time flat.  Besides, there are boxes of free peanuts to enjoy while you wait.

Five Guys plans to open an OSU campus location very soon.  And rumor has it an Easton spot is not far behind.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, 2134 Polaris Parkway, Columbus, OH.  Information and menu at fiveguys.com (click on link).

Vine Dining

worthingtoninn2.jpgFebruary is a perfect month for a crush in Columbus.  After all, we celebrate Valentine’s Day this month and have the opportunity to attend an amazing wine tasting.

Tonight, the Worthington Inn welcomes guests to its monthly wine dinner with “An Evening in Paris.”  Chef Tom Smith will prepare four courses inspired by the City of Light, each paired with a French wine.  The evening includes steamed PEI mussels, cauliflower veloute, roasted Cornish hen with chestnut-braised cabbage and warm apple tarte tatin with house-made ice cream.

The cost is just $70 per person (all inclusive) and reservations are required.  Find complete details, including wine information, at WorthingtonInn.com (click on link).

Columbus never felt so vine…

Super Bowl of Soup

peppizzasoup.jpgTo celebrate the end of National Soup Month and the big game on Sunday, we thought a crowd-pleasing recipe for an unexpected soup might be a great way to kick-off the weekend.

Check out George Duran’s recipe for Pepperoni Pizza Soup (click on link).  It’s a snap to make and will have your guests cheering for more.

But don’t forget the Cardinal rule, make enough for seconds (otherwise, beware of Steelers).

Nickel and Dined

nickel.gifIf you spend as little time worrying about forecasts as your mailman (neither freezing rain, nor snow, nor dire economic conditions will keep you at home), then read on.

Tonight, The Refectory hosts a Nickel & Nickel Single Vineyard Wine Event at 6:30 PM.  For $79.95 (gratuity included), guests will enjoy six wines and five food courses from Chef Richard Blondin.

The winery’s James Doehring will share current trends in winemaking, vintage updates, single vineyard wine philosophy and the Napa Valley viticultural region.  Reservations and information at therefectoryrestaurant.com (click on link).

So forget about the weather, this is a reason to wine.

Universal Appeal

hubble.jpgHas the winter weather left you feeling like the walls are caving in?  Could you use a little more space?

While a room addition might not fit into your budget these days, we found some inspiring artwork that is definitely affordable.  After all, it’s (kinda) free!

Hubblesite, home of the Hubble space telescope, offers gallery-quality downloads of the Carina Nebula, home to one of the most massive stars in the universe, at no cost to visitors of the site.  Download all eight panels for a stellar mural, or simply choose a couple of your favorites for a smaller wall.

The site also offers smart printing and framing tips (the not-so-free part).  Visit hubblesite.org (click on link) for details.

Far out…

Bowl Games

soup.jpgJanuary serves as the heart of bowl season - in more ways than one.  While fans of the pigskin pour through game stats and rankings, lovers of all things pig (and chicken and veggie and beef….) tempt their taste buds and trade recipes.

It makes perfect sense that January holds the title of National Soup Month.  So, in no particular order, here are a few great soups to get the juices flowing (click on highlighted links):

Matzo Ball at Block’s Bagels (multiple locations)

Chicken Avgolemono at Easy Street Cafe (197 Thurman Ave. in German Village)

Lobster Bisque at Shane’s Gourmet

Wedding Soup at The Hills Market

Tomato Basil at La Chatelaine

Hot and Sour at Moy’s Chinese Restaurant (1994 N. High Street on OSU campus)

Chicken Tortilla at Max & Erma’s

Wonton at Wing’s Chinese Restaurant (2801 E. Main Street near Bexley)

French Onion at Worthington Inn

Gumbo at Flatiron Bar & Diner

Now go get yourself some spoony love…

Change Is Here

obamachange.jpgWhile the Inauguration of the nation’s 44th president is still days away, change is already here.  Literally.  In fact, if you watch cable television, change appears during nearly every commercial break.

Perhaps holiday shoppers held back in order to save for the big celebration in D.C. next week.  After all, the airwaves are flooded with ads promoting the Obama coin and coin set (click on highlighted links).  That’s change we all need…

For those hoping to serve-up some change , look no further than the Obama plate .  But hurry, the company only offers two plates per customer (Greek-wedding-guests-for-Obama be damned).

For those with a bit more taste, don’t miss the Obama cookies from famed NYC cookie purveyor Eleni’s.

And for locals in Columbus truly hungry for change, on Inaugural eve (Monday, January 19), The Hills Market will offer a dinner inspired by courses from Inaugural Lunches of years past.  The four-course and three-wine meal, served in the wine department, costs $35 per person (reservations required).

But what if change scares the bejeezes out of you???  Consider taking a day-trip to Canada next Tuesday - we bet you’ll enjoy the distraction.

Breaking Windows

windows.jpgDoes your trusty PC sometimes leave you feeling a little bit in the dark?  Well, the new year serves as the perfect time to see the light.

Our friends at E-Roots Consulting have scheduled two free tutorial sessions for Windows (Mac users, E-Roots offers affordable and reliable computer tech service for you too).   Unlike a traditional training class, the brief sessions are designed to address the most common questions and challenges facing typical users and offer plenty of time for Q&A.

This Friday, January 16th, at 3:30 PM, the E-Roots guys will share Windows Tips and Tricks (Intro).  Then, the following week (January 23rd), they will continue the series and dig a little deeper into the system.

You’d be silly to miss this opportunity…  RSVP to info@erootsohio.com or call 614.220.9451.  E-Roots Consulting, 274 S. Third Street, Downtown Columbus.  More information at www.geekends.org.

Escrape the Cold

scraper.pngWe have some great frozen stuff to enjoy in Columbus: artisan ice cream, killer margaritas, and, of course, the ice on which our Blue Jackets play.

Car windshields, however, do not make the list.

So, unless you have the amazing ability to park inside a garage every single place you go (LP, are you reading?), living in Columbus these next couple of months will require an ice scraper or two…

The amazingly creative team at Pylones (click on link) has crafted a playful, yet truly functional, assortment of scrapers from which to choose.

So if you have to scrape, you might as well do it in style.

Ho Hmmm

gift.jpgIf you subscribe to the old saying “I’ll buy, you fly,” the following web-centric holiday gift ideas might just fit everyone on your list (click all highlighted links).

Game on:  Bridge the impossible-to-buy-for gap with fabulous card sets from Louis Vuitton (click men, then belts, ties & accessories, and then other accessories) and Tiffany.  Chess never looks square with the leather travel set from Mulholland, and dominoes certainly fall into the chic category with this set from Hermes.  While tic-tac-toe typically ends in a draw, this set from Ralph Lauren is definitely a winner.

Bejeweled:  She’ll be positively bubbly over this bracelet from Veuve Clicquot (enter DOB and then click on our products), or might just go ga-ga for this silver Double-G version from Gucci.  Finding the perfect necklace is a snap with this design by Coach

Un-grumpy gourmet:  For the sophisticated snacker, the chocolate pearl sampler from Petrossian will certainly satisfy.  And for those more comfortable on the opposite end of the sophistication scale, look no further than the automated spaghetti fork available at Baron Bob (though a nice Taste of Italy basket from Citarella will kick it up a notch or two).  Don’t be bugged with finding a super cute truffle - they’re available at Dylan’s Candy Bar.

Yo homey:  Light up any room with the ambient fire DVD (shot in HD), available at Vat19.   And speaking of light, the candle holder flashlight designed for Kikkerland at Velocity shines bright.   Turn any wall “green” with the hanging grass garden frame at A+R, or sweeten up the table with the Banana Kid sugar and creamer by Alessi at The Future Perfect.   Hang onto great memories with the mobile frame at Umbra.

In the spirit:  The drunken figs from John and Kira’s will definitely cause a stir, as will the Bourbon chocolates from Maker’s Mark (enter DOB and click on gifts).  And you’d be nuts not to consider giving the whiskey praline pecans from Jack Daniels (enter DOB and click on home & collectibles).

Pawsome ideas:  Add some scratch to your pad with this mountable piece from Square Cat Habitat at Supermarket.  Finally, lead Fido down the right path with a tartan collar and leash from J. Crew

We hope this holiday gift guide takes the shopping out of work!

Needa New Restaurant

thainoodles.jpgI want, I want, I want.  Those words sound so…unbecoming these days.  But need?  That’s a whole other story.

Thankfully, the Columbus Short North area got what it needed this week - a great new restaurant.  Nida’s Thai on High opened its doors with a large menu and simple, sophisticated style.

Guests can choose from a variety of Thai specialties, Noodles, Curry, Fried Rice, Sushi and more.  The cocktail list also includes a nice selection of Thai-inspired beverages (including a Lychee Martini).

Nida’s serves lunch Monday through Friday and dinner Monday through Saturday.  It closes on Sundays (hey, everyone needs a break!).

Tips for Sips

lemondrop.jpgHere’s a tip on how to survive Columbus’ not-so-perfect November weather - drink more alcohol!  Apparently, some Central Ohio restaurants agree and have scheduled tastings opportunities this week.

Tonight (Nov. 11) at 7 PM, Maca Cafe hosts a tasting of eight “perfect wines for the holidays,” including four reds, three whites and one sparkling.  The cost is $35 per person and reservations are required.  Details at macahome.com (click highlighted links for information).

On Wednesday, November 12th, the Refectory welcomes Scotch Master Winston Evans and the Single Malt Whiskies of The Glenlivet Distillery.  Enjoy a special four-course dinner for $75 per person.  Also on Wednesday, Tutto Vino will offer a tasting of ten wines to accompany Thanksgiving dinner for $20.

Thursday, November 13th, brings a wine tasting to Spagio Cellars to share holiday gift ideas.  The prepaid $49.50 includes food and wine.

Finally, on Friday, November 14th, head to Due Amici for Drinks in the Dark.  All the lights go out at 10 PM - music provided by DJ Patrick.

Feeling Flighty?

airtran.jpgIs your head still in the clouds from Tuesday’s election results?  Well, maybe the rest of your body should follow…

AirTran Airways starts daily service today from Port Columbus to destinations in Georgia and Florida.   Introductory rates to Atlanta start at just $54, while flights to Fort Myers and Orlando start at $67 and $74 respectively.  Visit airtran.com (click on link) to book a flight and learn more about the airline.

So whether you need to commiserate (GA is still a red state) or celebrate (FL turned blue) with friends, AirTran has you covered.

Counting on You

vote.jpgWell, the big day is finally here.  And, if you have managed to avoid tv for the past seven months, you still may not know all of your choices on the Central Ohio ballot.

For the R’s, visit franklincountygop.org (highlighted links) for their slate card - a list of endorsed candidates.  And for the D’s, head to fcdp.org for their sample ballot.

If you don’t fully understand the statewide ballot initiatives, the Ohio League of Women Voters does a nice job of summarizing them in their 2008 Fall Voter Guide (pros and cons for each issue).

For general voter information, visit the Franklin County Board of Elections website.

Finally, don’t forget to bring your iPod, book, magazines, etc. for what will surely be a crowded Election Day!

‘Wich Doctor

sandwich.jpgThe good folks at Katzinger’s (highlighted links) informed me that today is National Sandwich Day.  And to celebrate, they will offer two specials in the spirit of this year’s election - The Maverick (hot slow-cooked brisket with tangy BBQ sauce, cole slaw and swiss cheese on a Kaiser role) and The Change (hot corned beef, swiss cheese, spicy mustard on pumpernickel).

If you can’t make it to Katzinger’s today, other Columbus area sandwiches that deserve recognition (in no particular order) include: pulled pork with tri-color slaw at Tasi,  chicken and prosciutto panini at Bodega, #6 Duval Street vegetarian Monte Cristo at Banana Bean Cafe, pesto chicken at Press Grill, Cuban sandwich at Starliner Diner, sausage sub with banana peppers at Rubino’s, Village Addiction (smoked turkey and havarti with cranberry mayo grilled on sourdough) at The Brown Bag, chicken club at Black Creek Bistro, King’s braised BBQ pork at Northstar Cafe, Tip Top pot roast at Tip Top, blackened chicken at Oscar’s, Diavola (chicken cutlet, roasted eggplant, tomato, pesto and provolone) at Giuseppe’s, fig and prosciutto at Cafe Corner, and chicken salad at Shane’s Gourmet Market.

Live up to your bread winner status - eat a sandwich today!

Branch Out

fallcolor.jpgWe’re gonna go out on a limb and assume you might enjoy a change of scenery.  Additionally, we’re going to assume you won’t want to dig too deep into your savings account to accomplish the goal.

It sounds like a perfect time to head to the hills.  No, not the land of LC, Speidi, Lo, and Audrina.  We’re talking about Ohio’s own Hocking Hills - just about an hour from Columbus.

The hills have exploded with fall colors.  And the cooler temperatures encourage hiking, biking, and, of course, hot tubbing.

Two properties stand out from the rest.  Glenlaurel Inn (click on links) brings the look and feel of Scotland to Ohio, while the Inn and Spa at Cedar Falls offers the modern amenities of the Inn, as well as the more rustic cabins and cottages.

Weekend reservations might be tough (be sure to be placed on a cancellation list), but consider taking a “mental health day” during the week when there is more availability.  So, make like a tree and leave…

Chow-lumbus Day

colsday.jpgHalloween has trick-or-treat.  And Christmas obviously has gift exchanges.  But, Columbus Day…..?  Nothing really comes to mind - until now.

Today marks the last day of Experience Columbus Days - don’t miss the chance to receive a 25% discount on meals for two at any Dine Originals Columbus restaurant.  Restaurants in group range from Alana’s Food and Wine to Z Cucina (and all are locally owned).

It’s a perfect excuse to explore someplace new.

Information and details at experiencecolumbus.com (click on link).

Zip It Up

zipline.jpgThankfully, we’re not offering advice about this weekend’s outerwear.

On the contrary, while the sun still shines bright and temps remain warm, it’s a perfect time to zip.

Hocking Hills Canopy Tours offers world-class zipline tours through the treetops of Ohio’s beautiful Hocking Hills.  And there’s no better way to enjoy the changing colors of the season than flying high above the forest floor on a network of cables and skybridges.

So, Columbus, it’s not too late, to zip it, zip it good…

Got Votes?

cereal.jpgPolitical candidates have a long history of milking people for money and votes.  Now you can turn the table on them!

For a VERY limited time, you have the opportunity to order a box of Obama O’s or Cap’n McCain’s.  One has hope in every bowl and the other has mavericks in every bite!

Each brand has a maximum run of 500 boxes, so don’t delay.  They will certainly make their way to the late night talk show circuit soon.

Available at charlesandmarie.com.

Berry, Berry Good

friand.JPGMove over muffin.  Sayonara scone.  There’s a new treat in town.  And it’s a goodie.

Master Chocolatier Kristy Yosick discovered the Friand from a student colleague and quickly became a big fan.

French in origin, but most popular in Australia, the Friand resembles a muffin, but brings much more to the table.  Its variety of textures - slightly crispy rim, nutty and cake-like middle, and gooey berry center - make it different (and delicious).

Yosick offers Friands in two flavors - raspberry and blueberry.  Not too sugary or sweet, they’re a perfect mate for your morning coffee, afternoon tea, or midnight milk.

Yosick’s Artisan Chocolates, 539 S. Fifth Street, Columbus, OH  (in German Village)  614.223.9575

Snappy Dresser

index_001.jpgFashion awareness starts early these days.  Luckily, Columbus babies can now hang tough with Honor Marie, Vivienne Marcheline, Knox Leon, Levi Alves, Zuma Nesta Rock and all the other “big” shot babies (if you recognize all these names, immediately cancel your subscription to US Weekly).

Punkster onesies have returned to SoBo Style.  Loved by Hollywood and Columbus moms alike, the new line features “I Crawled the Line,” ”iPood,” and “Cuter than the Dog.”

They come in sizes 3m-6m, 6m-12m, and 12m-18m and cost just $28 each.

Cleverly packaged in a baby bottle, these babies will not last long.

SoBo Style (click on link), 3282 N. High Street, Columbus OH (Clintonville area)

Chews Wisely

autumn.jpgSeptember brings plenty of good things - football weekends, cooler temps, kids back in school, and the seasonal harvest.  While we always want to support the great talent we enjoy in Columbus, sometimes its fun to try the fare of foodies outside the area.  Here are a few suggestions:

September is the official lobster month in the state of Maine - let the lobstermen at Catch a Piece of Maine send you the freshest catches from their traps.  Customers can choose to sponsor a trap for an entire year (getting all viable lobsters caught) or simply opt for a lobster feast for two (with several options in between).  Lobsters arrive with cooking instructions, recipes, utensils, a map of the location where the lobsters were caught, a photo of the captain’s boat and more.  Premium Partners can monitor their catches online and receive personal video messages from their captain!  Learn more at catchapieceofmaine.com (click on link).

Available exclusively in September, the chocolate experts at Bissinger’s hand dip freshly harvested blackberries from the Pacific Northwest into rich chocolate and ship them to your doorstep.  Don’t let the peak of blackberry season pass you by - visit bissingers.com (click on link).

Finally, the autumn harvest yields delicious apples - perfect for apple pie.  Looking for the best?  The folks at The Elegant Farmer have won the title of “best pie in America” from The Wall Street Journal and Gourmet magazine.  Put your taste buds to the test at elegantfarmer.com (click on link).

Check out each of the above - we bet you’ll fall for something.

Map Quest

holman.jpgLooking for a unique gift idea?  Can’t find a keepsake for members of a wedding party or family reunion?  Use a map, silly.  Literally.

Columbus artist Anne Holman utilizes vintage maps to create beautiful pendants and cuff links.  Trained at CCAD and working exclusively with sterling silver, Holman crafts each one-of-a-kind piece by hand.  Her attention to detail is evident in each quality piece.

Holman secures sections of maps in custom settings and sets them behind magnifying resin.  Choose from her collection of pieces from world capitals, or create a custom piece of your own.  Holman has several antique atlases with locations from every corner of the earth.

Affordable and stylish, Anne Holman jewelry is quite a find.

Phat ‘n Happy

cimg0703.JPGDoes Columbus really need more Phat?

When it comes to the brand new Phat Wraps restaurant, the answer is a resounding yes!

Phat Wraps, opening today on the OSU campus, serves hot, fast and healthy wraps from its clean and simple home on East 12th Avenue (just off of High Street).  Choose a grilled chicken, steak or vegetarian filling, then take the wrap to the Phat Bar to stuff it with as much lettuce, tomatoes, bean sprouts, cucumbers, jalapenos, mint cilantro and purple basil as you like.  Spice it up with house made hot sauce or zesty mayo.

The restaurant will celebrate a grand opening later this month, but we already think it is Pretty Hot And Tempting (or PHAT, if you will).

Phat Wraps, 10 E. 12th Avenue, Columbus, Ohio

Week Stomach, Vol. 2

summer.jpgAfter an action-packed summer weekend in Columbus (or elsewhere), it’s pretty easy to stay home and relax.  However, this week, some of the best restaurants in Central Ohio have planned tasting events that should tempt you and your buds to sit back and lounge in a much more active way.

Tonight, Bexley Monk continues its “2nd Monday” wine dinner series with a menu of “High Brow Fair Foods.”  Taste Lobster & Shrimp Corndogs, a Beefsteak Tomato Salad Stack, Smoked Lamb Ribs, and Mini Elephant Ears, each paired with a different wine for $50 per person (plus tax and gratuity).  Additional information at bexleysmonk.com.

On Wednesday, Z Cucina welcomes Steve Bird and John Hancock for a New Zealand wine event.  Menu highlights include a Spiny Lobster Fritter, New Zealand Fish and Chips, and Squab Under a Blanket.  The evening will feature six courses paired with wines from New Zealand for $70 per person (tax and tip included).  Additional information at zcucina.com

Then on Thursday, The Refectory hosts the always popular Annual Best Buy Patio Tasting, featuring 12 unique wines and ten courses of hors d’oeuvres.  If the reservation list for this week’s event proves too tough to crack, the restaurant has scheduled a second date next Wednesday, August 20th.  Visit therefectoryrestaurant.com for all the details.

Recruit some friends to attend with you - strength comes in numbers.

The Big One One

eleven.jpgTen gets its fair share of at-ten-tion.  There are the famous Top Ten lists, Perfect Ten scores, and the Big Ten Conference, just to name a few.

And what about11?  It claims the second half of a quickie mart chain’s name and the late night news hour.  Snooze.

That is about to change in Columbus.

Eleven, a new dining and drinking destination on the Short North’s Cap, is scheduled to open today.  It promises a seasonal menu of small-plate items and a bar pouring some of the most interesting cocktails in Central Ohio.  Drinks will feature “molecular mixology” techniques, the recently legalized absinthe, and, of course, a wide selection of wines by the bottle and glass.

For the next couple of months, patrons of Eleven can enjoy an outdoor dining experience on the large patio, as well as an indoor-outdoor bar.

Sounds like the number reasons to visit Cap is really adding up.

Eleven, 591 N. High Street, Columbus OH

Slydial is a voice message service that connects you directly to a person’s voicemail - without their phone ever ringing.

Simply dial 267-slydial (267-759-3425) from any landline or mobile phone, enter the U.S. mobile number of the person you wish to contact, then leave a message on their voicemail (after enduring a very short ad).  Perfect for calling in “sick” or apologizing the morning after being overserved by your local bartender.

Well, you’re about to get lucky… DeepWood is scheduled to begin its new lunch service today (lunch served Tuesday through Friday from 11 AM to 3 PM).

summer1.jpgUpset by a lack of things to do this week?  Check out some great food events around Columbus.

On Wednesday, Black Creek Bistro hosts a wine dinner with Clyde Gilbert of Raymond Vineyards.  The Raymond family can trace its roots in the Napa wine industry directly back to Jacob and Frederick Beringer in the 1870s.  The evening will pair fine wines with three courses plus dessert for $55 per person plus tax & gratuity.  Reservations and additional information at blackcreekbistro.com.

Also on Wednesday, Chef Anthony of the Inn at Cedar Falls leads a cooking summer cooking class that will share quick and easy finger foods using many locally sourced food products.  The class runs from 11 AM to 2 PM, costs $25 per person and includes lunch.  Additional information at innatcedarfalls.com

Then on Thursday, head to Katzinger’s Delicatessen for a goat cheese and wine tasting.  The menu will feature seven goat’s milk cheeses from around the world, each paired with a wine from the corresponding region.  The event starts at 6:30 PM and costs $24.95 per person (tasting participants enjoy 20% off cheese purchases).   Reservations can be made at 614.228.3354.

Finally, on Thursday and Friday, Blacklick Wine & Spirits welcomes Solera Wines’ Jan Wilson and will pour Dr. Burklin-Wolf Riesling, La Sera Moscato d’Asti, Boroli Barbera and Masterpeace Shiraz.  The cost is $8 per person between 6 PM and 8 PM.  Additional information at blacklickwine.com.

The week never looked so strong.

Weekend Agenda

summer.jpgTGITW.  It’s Summer in the City and Columbus has plenty to offer this weekend (click on highlighted links for additional information).

Sip:  The North Market Ohio Food and Wine Festival pairs great food with wine from 15 of Ohio’s 100-plus wineries.  Activities also include live music, a Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Craft Fair on Sunday, and cooking demonstrations led by two contestants from Bravo’s Top Chef television show.  Why go?  Because it’s a perfect excuse to wine.

Gaze:  Waterfire on the Mile illuminates the downtown riverfront with a series of wood-fueled bonfires.  Why go?  To get fired-up for a great Saturday night.

Watch:  Outdoor movie fans can catch the Marx Brothers’ classic “Duck Soup,” part of the summer film series at the innovative Bureau for Open Culture art program at CCAD.  The current year-long exhibition, titled “To Whom Do You Beautifully Belong?” follows the life of an under-utilized plot of land in the city (leased for $1).  Why go?  See what rent for a buck gets you these days.

Jam:   PromoWest Productions offers a double-feature on Sunday.  The LC Pavilion welcomes 311 and Snoop Dogg, while the Schott hosts Poison with Dokken and Sebastian Bach.  Why go?  So obvious (pretty blunt…).

Pit Stop

ess17-011.jpgAfter the big holiday weekend, it’s definitely time to take a break - at least from your regular restaurant routine. Fortunately, one of the city’s most successful restaurateurs is providing a new option to Columbus diners.

Black Olive, a new venture from the owner of Shoku and Tyfoon, opens today in the Short North with a menu focused on American fare. The restaurant will welcome guests into its modern and comfortable space for lunch and dinner, Monday through Saturday. Outdoor patio seating is in the works - look for it soon.

Highlights of the “soft opening” menu include a Wedge Salad, Spicy Shrimp Flat Bread, Shrimp & Grits, Pasta Pomodoro, Jalapeno-Blue Cheese Stuffed Burger, and Citrus-Baked Sea Bass. Expect additional favorites in the weeks to come.

Looks like a perfect time to branch out and try something new.

Power Struggle

igo.jpgBarack vs. Hillary.  Gates vs. Jobs.  Naomi vs. Assistants.  Amy vs. Cigarettes (and drugs and alcohol…).  LC vs. Heidi.  You vs. Dead Electronics.

Each match-up - some trivial, some not - represents a struggle for the upper hand.  In the latter, one simple tool can tip the balance in your favor.

iGo products use interchangeable power tips that allow one adapter to keep all your devices charged and ready for use.  Standard electrical outlets, automobile lighters, and even some airplane seats can fuel your laptops, MP3 players, cell phones, digital cameras and more.

The iGo products come in a variety of bundles (and prices) and will greatly simplify the life of a frequent traveler.

Let the others keep tangling - you finally can negotiate a piece-a-cord.

Rapp It Up

baby.jpgSometimes bigger is not better.  The most fabulous gifts can arrive in small boxes.   Mini-burgers now appear on the menus of some of Columbus’s finest restaurants.  And let’s not forget Mike Myers’ pal, Verne Troyer (in Austin Powers, not the tragic Love Guru).

Jamie Rapp’s designs also deserve a mention.  Her clothing and accessories for little ones could not be cuter.

Teensy by Jamie Rapp produces whimsical and wearable designs for babies and toddlers.  Each piece looks thoughtful and hand-crafted - not a formula design.

Yeah baby…

Blend In

lvcamo2.jpgIt’s tough out there - battling the masses at the barista’s counter and fighting through traffic in the concrete jungle.

Design God Marc Jacobs and international legend Takashi Murakami understand your struggles.  Their answer?  In a word - Monogramouflage!

Following-up on their phenomenally successful collaboration in 2002, the new Louis Vuitton design takes camo from Baghdad to must-have bag.

Saks Fifth Avenue at Polaris received two bags over the weekend, we believe one Jasmine and one Lys (the two styles currently available).  Additional styles should hit stores at the beginning of July.

As of last night, both bags were in stock and available.  But hurry, they could disappear at a moment’s notice.

What a Sucker

lollyphile.jpgThai Chili ice cream had you at “hello.”  But what’s next to tempt your tongue?

Stop lolly-gagging around and check-out the new lollyphile.com.

Based in San Francisco, Lollyphile set out to make the most “interesting and unique lollipops in the world.”  Its first two flavors, Absinthe and Maple-Bacon, certainly seem to fulfill the mission.

The company promises additional flavors in the coming months - ones that offer as much of a gastronomical adventure as a fancy dinner.  Sounds intriguing - let’s hope they stick with it.

Weekend Agenda

frontpage41.jpgAfter yesterday’s monsoon, we start the weekend on Friday the 13th.  Enjoy the following (at your own risk):

Tour:  the annual Parade of Homes starts this weekend for its two week run.  Tonight, the BIA hosts a preview party with proceeds benefiting Nationwide Children’s Hospital and other charities.  Prove them right - if they build it….  Information and tickets available at biaparade.com.

Hunt:  bargain shoppers should not miss the Short North’s sidewalk sale on Saturday.  Look for amazing deals on clothes, beauty products, gifts and much more.  You never know what’s in store (or in this case, on sidewalk).  Information at shortnorth.org.

Snoop:  satisfy the inner-voyeur in you by touring the 17 properties on this year’s City Hop.  You’ll get a peek at how the urban-half lives.  The only thing better would be CMH Cribs.  Information and tickets at columbuslandmarks.org.

Explore:  head over to Yellow Springs for their Saturday Street Fair.  Over 200 vendors will offer food, jewelry, art, candles and imported goods.  It will be worth the trip (in every sense of the word).  Information at yellowspringsohio.org.

Peace, out.

Day for Padre

dad.jpgFather’s Day is just four days away - here are a few unique gift ideas that won’t tie up a lot of time and money.

Cheer him up with a new shirt from famed Parisian maker Boege or a pair of pants from Bonobos.  After all, bright is the new black.

For the guy who tackles any challenge head-on, pick out something from Canterbury of New Zealand (limited styles available at Nordstrom’s at Easton).  He’ll get a kick out of the cool rugby style.

Or for something far less City Slicker, check out the leather Ammunition Belt from Billy Reid.  Maybe a bit extreme for daily wear, but hey, he can give it a shot.

Entertain Dad for hours with the Dangerous Book for Boys (available at local bookstores, or click on the link to go to Amazon).  But be prepared - he just might try to teach you a thing or two.

Always on the run?  Get Dad an all leather Chess and Checker Board Set from Mulholland Brothers (Backgammon set also available).  It rolls and ties for games on the go (just like him).

And speaking of rolling, keep him looking sharp with the new Rolling Razor.  It’s the ringer of the list.

Make life a little sweeter with a box of goodies from local favorite Loralie’s Brownies.  So moist……..

Finally, give Dad a new best friend with a rescued dog from the Capital Area Humane Society or Franklin County Dog Shelter.   Life can be so ruff.

Click on highlighted words for links to additional details.

Pace Yourself

housewine.jpgLearning starts early in life ~ how to walk, how to whine, and, after (at least) 21 years, how to walk and wine.

For those who have mastered the latter, tomorrow’s Old Worthington Wine Walk is right up your path.  To participate, follow these three easy steps.

Step 1:  Buy tickets at House Wine ($30 today or $35 tomorrow) for the June 11 event.

Step 2:  Between 6 PM and 9 PM, enjoy a selection of 15 wines at three of Worthington’s favorite institutions - House Wine, The Worthington Inn, and La Chatelaine.

Step 3:  Have a designated driver available for the drive home (or meander on foot if applicable).  After all, hailing a Cab could be taken the wrong way…

Hello, Rose…

bredl.jpgRemember A Private Affair?  Or Leaves of Grass?  And, of course, Green.  They inspired us with beautiful botanical creations in their Short North shops, then departed for greener pastures.

Well, a new player entered the field over the weekend.  One hoping to plant itself firmly in the hearts of ShoNo shoppers.

Rose Bredl opened its doors this past Saturday in the former Little Shop of Shoes location.  With a simple yet sophisticated style, the store offers plants, small gifts, wonderful potting vessels and more.

Fans of all things flora might recognize a few things - Rose Bredl also shared space with Found in Powell.  If you have visited that location in the “GNWT” (Great Northwest Territory), you know it has big shoes to fill…

Stop by and support the store  - we don’t want it to leaf us.

Rose Bredl, 664 North High Street, Columbus, OH

Weekend Agenda

frontpage4.jpgHere are a few highlights for what will certainly be a hot and happening weekend.

Invest:  Artists descend upon Columbus this weekend for the annual Arts Festival.  Be sure to visit the booths of Scott Olson and George Raab for inspired pieces at reasonable prices.

Ingest:  What could make a classic late-night movie even better?  Pizza and beer, of course.  This Saturday at Studio 35, the Rocky Horror Picture Show hits the big screen at 11:30 PM.

Involve:  Support several good causes this weekend, including the Hope Weekend activities to raise funds for the recovery of Haiku waitress Rachel Widomski and the Jack Roth Run, benefiting cancer research and Camp Netaim.

Click on above links for additional information.

NYC Raw

sushi.jpgYouScoop spent last week in the Big Apple and will deliver a few NYC scoops over the next couple of weeks.  First on deck - the best sushi in the City.

Blue Ribbon Sushi, 119 Sullivan Street in SoHo, offers absolutely no frills and does not take reservations.  The restaurant has a cult following in NYC, though the space can feel a bit tight.  A newer post, Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar & Grill, opened across the street from the Shops at Columbus Circle and offers a more comfortable experience (6 Columbus Circle - just off of West 58th Street).

Inside the Time Warner Center, on the fourth floor of the Shops at Columbus Circle, you’ll find Bar Masa.  The casual side of the the incredibly expensive Masa (meals there start at $300+ per person), the restaurant does not accept reservations.  Bar Masa serves superior sushi, and though still expensive, offers an amazing Japanese dining experience at a fraction of the cost of neighboring Masa.

Nobu, at 105 Hudson Street in Tribeca, just might be the most famous sushi restaurant in the world, and for good reason.  The food is incredible - and no other restaurant in town attracts more celebrities.  The Nobu empire headed to Midtown a couple of years ago, opening Nobu 57 at 40 W. 57th Street.  Securing a reservation at Nobu or Nobu 57 can prove difficult, but check in the late afternoon for last minute cancellations.  Next Door Nobu, also in Tribeca, only accepts walk-ins.

Bond Street, 6 Bond Street in the East Village, is back after a devastating fire.  Not as high profile as Nobu, but not quite as casual as Blue Ribbon, Bond Street stakes claim to a really nice middle ground.  The restaurant fills each night with a young and attractive clientele, eager to enjoy fine Japanese fare.

At Morimoto, 88 Tenth Ave. in the Meatpacking District, diners walk into quite a scene.  Morimoto worked for Nobu, then moved to Philadelphia to open his own restaurant.  The NYC outpost opened a little over two years ago and continues to receive rave reviews.

Blue Fin, 1567 Broadway in the W Hotel Times Square, welcomes tourists and theater-goers alike.  While large and relatively family friendly, the sushi is still top notch.

Soto, 357 Sixth Ave in the West Village, bills itself as a place for experienced sushi connoisseurs, not a place for novices.  Expect artful dishes with vibrant and distinctive flavors.

Be sure to order the omakase menu whenever possible, especially if you venture to Soto (where it is apparently a MUST).  Omakase meals typically start at $80 per person, but are well worth the price.  In an omakase meal, the chef chooses and serves his best dishes of the night - typically in 5-7 small courses.

Visit any of the above and you’ll be on quite a roll (click on restaurants for available links).

Tome Raider

beachbook.jpgThis year’s summer box office does not look as if it will disappoint (unless you invested time and/or money in Speed Racer).  After all, you jonesed for Jones craved more Sex - and got both before June 1st!   And the studios have just started to deliver…

But what about the other hugely important piece of summer entertainment?  That’s right, the pool/beach/jetting-to-somewhere-fabulous book.

This summer, allow Elisa Albert and Michael Tonello to invade the space typically occupied by Nora Roberts and John Grisham.  You’ll be glad you did.

With The Book of Dahlia, Elisa Albert introduces readers to Dahlia Finger, a stereotypical Jewish American Princess.  But getting cancer and subsequently finding a self-help book (It’s Up to You: Your Cancer To-Do List) drastically changes her life.  Though a little dark and sarcastic, just like Dahlia, the book asks an important question - should we mourn a “shallow” life?

Meanwhile, on the (much) lighter side, Michael Tonello provides a first-hand account of how to secure the ultimate “It” bag in Bringing Home the Birkin: My Life in Hot Pursuit of the World’s Most Coveted Bag.  As much a story on finding one’s way in life as the legendary Hermes accessory, the book perfectly captures the insane world of luxury goods and should find its way into every fashionista’s (Tory Burch) canvas tote.

Both books are widely available at local book stores and, of course, online.

What’s Bugging You

zindel.jpgWhile it’s certainly easy to spend money ridding your home of insects, it is much more fun to invest some of that hard-earned cash decorating with them.

New at Collier West, the fun and fantastic work of artist Laura Zindel will shake up your tabletop with plates, bowls, drinking vessels, serving pieces and more.

The collection receives inspiration from Victorian Cabinets of Curiosity and will almost certainly spark conversation (and collecting).   Each piece is individually hand made in a modern process of what was once called transferware, first introduced in the 1700s.

The creature comforts of home never looked so cool.

Corner the Market

northmarket.gifWe’ve got the secret to maximizing your hard-earned resources in today’s crazy market.

No, not the stock market.  It’s much better than that.  Not the commodities market.  Better.  The oil futures market?  Nope, BETTER.

Of course, we are talking about one of Columbus’ favorite public places - the always-bustling North Market.

While the North Market boasts dozens of wonderful shops, visiting the four corners of the building will yield some of the best items the Market has to offer.

Let’s start in the southeast corner at Curds and Whey.  Offering one of the most impressive cheese selections in the city, the shop also carries a wide selection of gourmet products for your enjoyment at home.  On a recent visit, we received two outstanding cheese recommendations - the award-winning Blomma Artisan Cheese (crafted in Cleveland!) and Ardi Gasna from France.  Try both and you’ll have a cow (well, actually, a goat and a sheep).

Heading west, we run into Omega Artisan Baking, the home of the perfect Pepperoni Roll.  Baked fresh on site each day, the Pepperoni Roll packs a flavorful punch that is perfect for a mobile lunch.

Strolling north (past many other favorites…), we arrive at Lac Viet Vietnamese Market.  Order a #10 (a bowl of broken rice, rice noodles, grilled beef, cucumber, carrot, tomato, and cilantro) and grab a stool at the counter.  At just $6, it’s definitely worth fighting the crowd.

Making the last turn back east, we end at our busiest corner.  At The Fish Guys, mex things up with a Seafood Burrito (changes daily) and a side of Ginger Octopus Salad.  Or if you feel like vegging, visit Firdous for the Roasted Eggplant(with olive oil, garlic, paprika and roasted peppers) with a small Greek Salad and a side of rice (choose the Mojadara - lentils and rice with herbs and spice).  Finally, spice up your next cookout with a few Chicken Burgers to go from North Market Poultry and Game.  Your friends and/or family will be surprised by the delicious Chipotle or Sun Dried Tomato patties.

Invest in the Market and we’ll guarantee you a healthy return.

First Things First

seat.jpgSkybus might be gone, but its name (literally) lives on.  Flying the “friendly skies” has never felt more like going Greyhound.  Heck, the bus probably outscores many airlines on customer service, on-time departures and overall value.  If only it could drive 500 miles-per-hour…

The only way to escape the madness of the masses comes from snagging a first- or business-class seat.  However, the real estate at the front of the plane has never been in greater demand.

Subscribing to your favorite airline’s e-mail alerts serves as an excellent way to discover deals on premium seats.  However, many other carriers can offer one-time deals that might work well with your schedule (and budget).

Save your in-box from dozens of irrelevant airline newsletters by joining FlightBliss.com.  It sends a weekly e-mail detailing the top deals from over 30 domestic and international carriers on first- and business-class tickets.  Flight Bliss also offers tips on how to maximize your loyalty program and credit card miles.  Best of all, the service is free!

Get a leg-up on the competition and join FlightBliss.com (after all, fare is fare).

Outside Guide to Mother’s Day

mothersday1.jpgYesterday, we promised to leave the center city and explore metro Columbus for great Mother’s Day gifts.  We filled the tank (ouch!) and headed towards the ‘burbs.  Here are the highlights:

For the gardener, the gift shop at the Franklin Park Conservatory serves as a wonderful resource.  Don’t miss succulents planted in 6″ bowls ($37) and beautiful 8″ whitewashed G. Wolff & Co.terra cotta pots ($37), perfect for the front steps.  The shop stocks an extensive collection of reference books, as well as potted plants and flowers in all shapes and sizes (including an amazing Japanese Juniper Bonsai tree for $38).  Include a pair of brightly painted garden clippers ($25) from SoBo Style, and you’ve got a gift any mom will dig.

For the collector, visit Sobo Style for a one-of-a-kind handmade brooch (around $40) from California artist Lisa Toland, or the gift shop at the Columbus Museum of Art for funky and original pins and necklaces (around $35) from Debbie Tuch (slices of actual dried fruit sealed with glitter resin).  Add a small “pearl dish” ($32) from No. 693 in Old Worthington and she’ll be-dazzled.

For the sentimental, find a new home for an old photo with handmade Artdepartment frames($48) at the Columbus Museum gift shop or distressed wood frames with elegant bows from AB Designs ($60+), available at No. 693.  And guarantee a heart-felt thank you with a bright and sunny Kate Spade 15-piece note-card set from Peabody Papers

For the practical, stock-up on the incredibly small and portable Envirosax($8.50) at SoBo Style - outfit the car, office and house for under $30!  Add a bit of style to bedtime with Pine Cone Hill PJs ($59), available at No. 693.  And personalize the personal regimen with custom-blended and environmentally friendly cremes (around $20) and lotions (around $10) from Earth Elements.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget the most important gift of all - a sincere “I love you, Mom.”

Inside Guide to Mother’s Day

mothersday.jpgFor those who live, work and play in “downtown” Columbus (including the Villages), there is no reason to travel much beyond your beloved I-670 ring to purchase the perfect gift for Mom.  Here are some highlights.

Pamper her with handmade, all natural bath products from Fraiche.  The Bath Swizzle and organic soaps (each $12) can be found at Helen Winnemore in German Village.  In the Short North, stop by Luxe de vie for 100% natural (food-grade organic!) products from Suki (around $30), or On Paper for luxurious items, including the Bath Foam ($54), from Lollia.

Spoil her with nature-inspired earrings (around $50) and necklaces (around $75) from acclaimed jewelry artist Michael Michaud for Silver Seasons, or classic enamel bangle bracelets with a modern twist (under $50), all at On Paper.  This month exclusively at Rowe, find beautiful Czech glass pearl necklaces (around $110) from Girls Wear Pearls, a local company headed by an inspired artist.

Surprise her with a lightweight silk scarf ($88) in a brilliant jewel tone from Collier West.  Portions of proceeds will benefit “cottage industries” in Nepal, the country of origin.  Or pick up “Mom’s Little Vase,” a bud vase from Henrietta Glass that is available at Helen Winnemore, and fill it with your favorite bloom from Steven Cox Flowers or Market Blooms

Treat her with a 20-piece box of assorted artisan chocolates and truffles ($30) from Yosick’s in German Village, or an exquisite selection of sweets from the North Market’s Pure Imagination Chocolatier.  The whole family will appreciate a delicious and fresh lemon pinenut tart ($25) from Pistacia Vera, served on a stylish and outdoor-friendly acrylic tray from Caterina Ltd. (around $20).

So, now that you know where to go, put the rubber to the concrete and shop.  Tomorrow, we’ll share ideas outside the downtown bubble (that definitely require pedal to the metal).

Ten Before 10:00

breakfast.jpgWhether you need to fuel up for a long day or recover from an even longer night, you are in luck because Columbus has some great options for breakfast.  Here, in no particular order, are ten of our favorites:

10.   Greek Scrambled Eggs at Tasi

9.  Sweet Potato Omelette at Starliner Diner (a rotating special)

8.  French Toast at Tommy’s Diner (914 W. Broad Street)

7.  Katzinger’s #60 on toasted poppy

6.   Cloud 9 Pancakes at Northstar Cafe

5.  Cuban French Toast from Starliner Diner (a regular special)

4.  Cedar Key Shrimp & Grits at Banana Bean

3.  Corned Beef Hash at The Clarmont (684 S. High Street)

2.  Chorizo Scramble at Jack & Benny’s (2563 N. High Street)

1.  Huevos Rancheros (1/2 black beans, 1/2 potatoes) at Starliner Diner

We’ll follow-up with quick service and brunch options soon.  In the meantime, enjoy your morning with the perfect 10.

Monday Ole!

sombrero.jpgIt’s not often you have a legit reason to invite friends over to celebrate on a Monday night (after all, Gossip Girl and The Hills are private pleasures).

However, Cinco de Mayo changes all of that - and everyone loves a fiesta.

One trip to La Michoacana Mexican Market will cover all of your south-of-the-border party needs.  The store carries a full line of Mexican groceries, including fresh cut meats, large vegetables, freshly baked bread, Goya products, spices and much more.  The store promises to stock only the highest quality items and sell them for less money than a typical grocery store.

And for your Cinco de Mayo gathering, pick up Mexican flags, pinatas, maracas and sombreros at the store (it just isn’t a party without sombreros!).  They will certainly set the appropriate mood  - along with a few tequila shots…

For locations and hours, visit lamichoacanamexicanmarket.com.

A Rosy Weekend

derby.jpgThis weekend, horse racing fans will watch the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.  And while Columbus may not celebrate as enthusiastically as our neighbors to the south, we suspect more than a few cocktails will be poured in honor of the big race.

So, in the spirit of the “Run for the Roses,” crack open the bourbon and enjoy two of our favorites.

The classic mint julep:  2 cups sugar, 2 cups water, fresh mint sprigs, crushed ice, and bourbon (Blanton’s, Maker’s Mark, Basil Hayden’s, Eagle Rare, etc).

Prepare a simple syrup by heating the sugar and water until it turns clear (roughly five minutes).  Remove from heat, let cool and place syrup in a sealed container with 14 sprigs of mint and refrigerate for at least two hours (preferably overnight).  Prepare drinks individually by filling a glass with crushed ice, then adding two tablespoons simple syrup and two ounces of bourbon (less syrup for stronger cocktails).  Stir vigorously and garnish with fresh mint sprig and two short straws.

The YouScoop Splendid Summer:  freshly-brewed iced tea, lemonade, citrus fruit wedges, ice, and bourbon.

Fill a tall glass with ice and add 2 ounces of bourbon.  Fill the rest of the glass with an equal mixture of iced tea and lemonade.  Garnish with your preferred citrus wedge.

Try both drinks this weekend and your outlook will definitely match your cheeks (rosy, of course).  Cheers!

MayDay, MayDay

barefeet.jpgWarning!  Poolside parties rapidly approaching.

Alert, alert!  Flip-flop and sandal season straight ahead.

Take immediate action to avoid getting caught in an unsightly situation.

Girls, that means it is definitely time to schedule your warm weather waxing.  From bikini to Brazilian and everything in-between, you’ll feel cool and confident in your itsy-bitsy teeney-weenie yellow (what else) bikini.  Allie, master esthetician at The Charles Penzone Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany, will go to great lengths to make you feel calm and comfortable during your service.

Fellas, don’t think you’re off the hook.  If you expose those toes, just know people are looking.  And after a rough winter braving the snow and ice, a pedicure is in order.  Immediately.  Call Zeta at The Grand Salon at Polaris Parkway for a buff and shine (aka the Gentleman’s Pedicure).  The more adventurous should not miss the Sugar Buff (brand new) or Salt Glow Pedicures.  They’ll rescue even the most tortured toes.

With the help of Allie and Zeta, you’ll successfully survive the toughest tests of the season.  Come what May.

That’s Inn-crEdible

worthingtoninn2.jpgInn-teresting things are happening all around us.  Trees sprouting leaves virtually overnight.  Flowers and plants pushing through the garden soil.  Temperatures breaking 80 degrees.  And, thankfully, restaurants updating their menus to reflect the season.

Tonight, the Worthington Inn, a regular on Columbus’ Top Ten Restaurants list, Inn-troduces their new Spring menu - and it is filled with Inn-sanely good options.

For starters, try the new Kobe Beef Carpaccio with white truffle, parmesan cheese, arugula, radish, and spring onion.  Or perhaps the Mixed Seafood Platter of calamari, crab cake, grilled shrimp, & cocktail and tartar sauces.

On the lighter side, seasonal soups now Inn-clude Tuscan Tomato with white beans, pancetta, squash and pesto, as well as Chilled Cucumber and Dill with house-smoked salmon.

As for the headliners, be sure to try the Lobster Pot Pie with peas, corn, sherry cream, and Yukon potatoes; the Veal “A La Henry” - a parmesan crusted veal with tomato, basil, prosciutto sauteed zucchini, and Boursin mashed potatoes; or the Lamb Chops with orzo-vegetable salad, garlic-yogurt sauce, and roasted pepper harrisa.  And those are just a few of the new offerings (not to mention the Inn-dulgent desserts).

Reserve a table in the charming restaurant, grab a seat in the casual bar, or, if you’re lucky, snag a spot on the outdoor patio or porch.  And if you see Chef Tom, thank him for his Inn-ovative work!

The Worthington Inn, 649 High Street, Worthington, OH  614.885.2600.  Additional Inn-formation at worthingtoninn.com.

Are You Picklish?

mrpickles2.jpgIt feels like life has taken a turn for the serious these days.  The stock market bumps along on fears of the “R” word.  Hillary and Barack  continue their vlassic battle for the Democrat nomination.  And shoe funds have felt the crunch of gasoline budgets.

Who couldn’t use a good laugh these days?

For a great escape from reality, visit the the fantastic world of Mr. Pickles.

A Columbus brother and sister team created Mr. Pickles (”using telepathic powers on the very same day, at the very same time”) as a way to channel their creative juices.  Now, it is the bread and butter operation for their website and merchandising empire!

Visitors to Mr. Pickle can read Celebrity Love Poems, seek advice from Rusty Bear, send E-Cards, print calendars and play the games of the Activities Page.

Better yet, fans can spread the gospel of Mr. Pickles by purchasing Mr. Pickles gear!  They offer apparel for the entire family, Cuddlers (pictured), cards, pins, magnets and more.  Fortunately for us, all merchandise is very well priced - quite a dill.

Visit the world of Mr. Pickles at mrpickles.com.  Merchandise is also available locally at Wholly Craft and Wexner Center Bookshop.

Hippie Trippy

yellowsprings.jpgThere are 60 days until the beginning of ComFest, the super kind weekend festival in Columbus’ Goodale Park.

Can’t wait that long? Then relief is under 60 minutes away.

Gather your buds, roll down the windows, hop on I 70 West and escape the grind of big city life for an afternoon in Yellow Springs.

Yellow Springs, home to Antioch College and, more famously, Dave Chappelle, prides itself on the lack of chain restaurants and mall stores in town. Instead, the village is abuzz with plenty of unique shops, cafes and taverns for visitors to explore.

La Llama Place is stacked with treasures imported from and inspired by the artisans of Peru. Earth Rose International Imports carries clothing, gifts and, of course, plenty of Birkenstocks. Garden of the Goddess stocks hemp and silk clothing and other natural products, while Ohio Silver Co. offers a wide selection of jewelry.

After browsing the goods on Xenia Avenue and Dayton Street, perk up with a premium coffee from Dino’s Cappuccinos, a local favorite.  For food and a couple of brews, visit the Ye Olde Trail Tavern & Restaurant.  Ha Ha Pizza offers 30 toppings and calzones, while Sunrise Cafe and Peach’s Cafe both serve “eclectic” fare.  But save your serious munchies for Wind’s Cafe, a casual gourmet establishment with great organic and vegetarian options.

Weather permitting, take a stroll through Glen Helen, a 1,000-acre nature preserve with waterfalls, limestone cliffs and the Yellow Spring.  Or, for a more serious hike, hit the trails of nearby Clifton Gorge and John Bryan State Park.

On the way out of town, stop in the famous Young’s Jersey Dairy for an ice cream treat (you’ve earned it).  And if time is on your side, stick around for miniature golf and the chance to pet a few farm animals (a real natural hi).

For directions, information and additional details, visit yellowspringsohio.org.

Fare. Weather. Friends.

Residents of Columbus have plenty of reasons to welcome spring - the OSU Spring Game, Clippers baseball (ring your bell), leaves on trees, garden flowers, flip flops, sunglasses (and the accompanying sunshine), and dining al fresco.

And for outdoor dining enthusiasts, one of the most popular patios in the city is now prepared to open, weather permitting…

Lindey’s outdoor patio welcomes guests with its popular modern American menu and buzzing bar scene.  Tables with large umbrellas return to the charming brick courtyard, planned around a central trickling fountain.

It joins other notable outdoor options from Haiku, Spagio, Union and Barcelona.  All have opened for the season, as long as Mother Nature cooperates.

Be on the lookout for the famous green and white “Patio Open” flag on Mohawk Street.  Going out to eat hasn’t been this fun in months.

Expecting the Best

index_004.jpgThe old saying goes: April showers bring May flowers.

However, these days, we think it should be more like: April showers - bring a cool gift.

For celebrations honoring a bun in the oven, head over to SoBo Style in Clintonville.

The store has dozens of great gift ideas for both babies and moms-to-be.

One of our favorites is the baby kimono.  New kimono styles for spring just arrived in the store and they were certainly worth the wait.  The cotton prints look fresh and the packaging - in sushi boxes - is way fun.

The kimonos sell for a very reasonable $32 and come in sizes 6 months, 12 months and 18 months.

No, we’re not kidding (but plenty of couples are)!

Make it Count

running.jpgThe good: days are getting longer, brighter and warmer.

The bad: swimsuit season is just around the corner.

The ugly: your body after a long, snowy winter.

Fortunately, the “good” can help prepare for the “bad” and conquer the “ugly” with a little exercise.  And heading outside for some jogging or walking could not be easier (no membership required!) this time of year.

But how far is it around the park, then up the street a few blocks, and back down to home?

Map My Run can tell you.  Simply visit their website and enter your favorite route.  Then, you have the ability to calculate mileage, count calories, share your route with friends, and more.

Map My Run also allows you to search running/walking routes in your neighborhood and beyond.  Don’t let a business or family trip spoil your routine - Map My Run can detail trails and routes anywhere in the world (including elevation data, 3D views, and satellite maps).

Additionally, the site can maintain a log of your workouts, create a training schedule, monitor shoe mileage, and keep track of weight changes.

Talk about a home run…

Share Go Vert

vert.jpgDid this week’s speculation of some kind of Obama/Gore/Clinton “dream ticket” get your blood flowing (pro or con)?

Well, political posturing aside, it put the green movement back in the headlines.  And the timing could not have been better for our friends at Rowe Boutique in the Short North.

Tonight, Rowe celebrates the Short North’s effort to “Go Green” in April with a Spring Soiree from 5 PM to 9 PM.  Guests will have the chance to scoop up the newest spring fashions while enjoying an adult beverage or two.

Don’t miss the t-shirts, totes (pictured), and cowboy hats from the Vert label.  Not only are the products extremely Earth-friendly, but they are skin-friendly as well (amazingly soft!).

At tonight’s event, Rowe gets into the spirit of green savings by allowing customers to draw a surprise discount (up to 50%) at the register!

And unlike the candidates, we’re in total agreement about the issue - get to Rowe tonight.

Brangelina Love-Les

pitt.jpgFirst came a fairly surprising call with investors that the company was ”too sexy.”

Next, that the infamous Fashion Show would be reinvented.

And then, whispers about a major announcement .   But they couldn’t keep it a Secret for long…

The Jolie-Pitts are the new faces of Victoria’s Secret!!!

Angelina will kick-off a new sophisticated maternity line called Flowering Angel, while Brad launches the first-ever men’s line, Rusty Man (watch out Beckham - we heard the packaging will be VERY impressive).

But it doesn’t stop there.  In a historic marketing coup, the panty powerhouse managed to sign the rest of the family as well.

Maddox will be the face of Hawk, an Underoos-inspired brand, while Zahara will put puppy in the corner and re-launch Pink as Pink Bling.

But the biggest announcement might be the creation of a completely new store concept named Billie Hills, led by the angelic face of Shiloh.  Inspired by the beauty of New Zealand, the store will stock simple and stylish bras, undies and sleepwear.  The first store should open soon in Southfield, MA, with Long Island, Chicago and  Westport, CT not far behind.  The company hopes for 250 stores by April 1, 2012.

Complete details here.

Please note the date of this story, APRIL 1, 2008, also known as April Fool’s Day…

Cat Snip

garfield.pngMonday morning and the surf is up.

On the web that is…

And if your internet “research” can wait for just a couple of minutes, be sure to check out garfield minus garfield, a site that discovered cutting the main character from the comic strip actually delivers a far more interesting reading experience.

With Garfield out of the picture (literally), Jon Arbuckle is left to his own somewhat schizophrenic thoughts.  We follow his lonely and desperate life in suburbia - and laugh along the way.

Perhaps the networks will take notice of this very creative direction.  Could we actually have “Seacrest, out?”

Check it out at garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com.

Pearly Girl

pearls.jpgThere are burly girls, surly girls, swirly girls, and, of course, pearly girls.

For the latter, we discovered a new treasure for your chest.

Girls Wear Pearls offers unique, hand-crafted necklaces made from Czech glass pearls (don’t worry PETA, no oysters were harmed!).  Better yet, prices won’t sink your ship.

The artist, a Columbus-area resident with a lifelong connection to pearl jewelry, discovered working with Czech glass pearls to be her true calling after experimenting with other mediums.  She rightfully believes pearls make any outfit “pearl-fect.”

Inspired by vintage styles, the necklaces compliment everything from denim to Dior.

So, when in doubt about how to accessorize for spring, don’t get strung-out.  Simply reach for your pearls.

Information at girlswearpearls.com.

Your Real Calling

800.jpgTexting?  You’re a pro.

Web on the go?  Sooooo 2006.

Maps, directions, and streaming video on your phone?  Of course.

But actually getting a live person on the phone when calling airlines, credit cards, banks, stores, etc?  Big Problem.

Until now.

BRINGO navigates most phone tree systems and calls you when a person is on the line!

Simply visit their website, click on the name of the company you are trying to reach (organized by category or alphabet), enter your phone number, and wait for your call.

When you pick up, a live person will gladly answer your questions with the respect and courtesy you deserve.  Well, perhaps not, but at least a living person will be on the phone…

And rest assured, BRINGO promises never to disclose your number - “not even to your mother.”

Finally, we have freedom from phone trees!  Let BRINGO ring!!

Holy Cacao

yosicks1.jpgThe worshipers of chocolate have a new place to call their own.

Yosick’s Artisan Chocolates recently opened on a quiet corner in German Village. But don’t expect it to go unnoticed for long.

Yosick’s is a bright and cheery gathering spot offering breakfast pastries, espresso, teas, coffees, and drinking chocolates.

But the real reason to visit is the chocolate. From artisan truffles to retro cremes, you can’t go wrong.

The shop offers great gift boxes and baskets (we visited while chocolate bunnies were being made). Special orders and large trays are available for your next event. All products are certified Kosher Dairy.

Yosick’s Artisan Chocolates, 539 South Fifth Street (at Jackson), Columbus, OH 614.223.9575

Be Scents-able

earthelem.jpgSpring is so close you can almost smell it (though 17 inches of snow doesn’t sell it).

Its time to take matters into your own hands.

At Earth Elements in Grandview, clients are encouraged to custom-blend fragrances to add to the store’s soaps, body washes, shampoos, oils and cremes.

The blendologists can help you create recipes based on individual skin needs, or simply work with your favorite scents. Virtually all fragrances come from plant-based compounds with no synthetic scents or colors.

For early spring, try a combination of Rosewood, Tangerine, and Lavender. One whiff and you’ll be hooked.

Earth Elements encourages direct recycling, allowing customers to re-use containers over and over again. In this case, BYOB definitely makes cents.

The store also carries a wide selection of Archipelago products, as well as items from Davies Gate, Zia, Provence, Sante and more.

What fabulous scent will you create? Who nose…

Earth Elements, 1407 Grandview Ave., Columbus, OH. 614.488.8570

Eggseptional Easter Candy

easter.jpgSome people speculate the Easter egg tradition was hatched from a relationship between Eostre, a pagan goddess, and her association with Hares and eggs.

Well, the evolution from Hares to the modern Easter Bunny makes some sense.

But the relationship to eggs is a bit more scrambled.  Where do the eggs come from - the Easter Chicken (bawk, bawk)?

Thankfully, no.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find chocolate eggs from John & Kira’s in your basket this year.

The Artisan Easter Eggs from John & Kira’s arrive in a wooden box, decorated with a purple ribbon.  But it is what’s on the inside that counts.  Each chocolate egg is decorated by hand and filled with delicious Valrhona dark chocolate ganache.

The company sources the freshest ingredients from local and family farms.  It also supports community projects like Project Mintpatch, which helps kids in urban areas learn about nutrition while also earning money.

Easter is just around the corner, so hop to it and order your Artisan Easter Eggs soon.

Available online at JohnandKiras.com.

Lip Service

lips.jpgBritney likes them. So do the Jessicas (and if you have to ask, Alba and Simpson).

Jeff Lewis flips over them. And Lisa Rinna LOVES dancing with them.

Yes, we’re talking about plump lips.

BioScience Therapies, a company based in greater Columbus, now offers a great new product to help you achieve perfectly pouty lips, without a visit to Dr. 43215.

EMERGE is a lip enhancing gloss developed as an alternative to augmentation. Its two natural ingredients, L-arginine and CoQ10, moisturize and soften fine lines, while also increasing volume. The conditioning formula improves elasticity, rebuilds resiliency and reduces feathering.

EMERGE can be used under another lip product or alone as a gloss. The maker promises no pain, numbness or stinging (just a “pleasant tingly sensation”). Better yet, the plumpness will disappear when use is discontinued.

So, use EMERGE and kiss thin and dry lips goodbye.

For additional product information, visit BioScienceTherapies.com.

Buzz-worthy Bags

queenbee.jpgLooking for a unique bag or wallet that doesn’t require the bank account of a royal?

Honey, the search is over.

Sparrowfish, the stylish boutique in Clintonville, just received a new shipment of bags and wallets from Queen Bee Creations.

Based in Portland, OR, Queen Bee crafts their bags and wallets from animal-friendly vinyl, making cleaning a breeze (many are machine washable!).

Crafted by hand, styles include messenger-type bags, diaper bags, everyday purses and totes, wallets and more.  Some designs will appeal mostly to girls, but others (like the pictured bag) can be carried by everyone.

Regardless of what you choose, you’ll be swarmed by fans, so be prepared to answer a lot of questions about where you found it.  Of course, feel free to say “none of your beeswax.”

Queen Bee Creations available exclusively in Central Ohio at Sparrowfish, 3327 North High Street, Columbus, OH 43202. 614.453.5844

A Tail to Tell

donovan.jpgFriends and family can be so nosy - always hounding you for the latest details in life.

Maybe its time to shepherd in a new era of communication.

The new Canine Collection from Donovan Designs of Columbus should do the trick. The line includes both notepads and stationery and features 27 different breeds of dogs (with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Humane Society).

The Canine Collection joins an already fetching lineup of cards, notepads, labels, bag tags and invitations.  And they make great gift ideas too, whether it’s for a colleague, family member, or even you’re best friend.  Get it?  Man’s best friend?  Come on, throw me a bone here, people.  Anyway . . .

Founded by college friends, and named after the University of Kentucky dorm where they all lived, the company began with an open house in 2000. Now, products from Donovan Designs and 2skirts, a successful stationery company Donovan acquired last year, can now be found in over 1,000 retailers in 48 states.

Some people might think email is an appropriate alternative to the hand-written note. We beg to differ.

For styles and retailer information, visit donovandesignsinc.com.

They’ll Be Bach

ahnoold.jpgYou may have noticed the Ahnoold Classic has returned to Columbus.  As if avoiding Brady Quinn on any given night isn’t bad enough, the affliction t-shirt wearing, muscle heads with oversized craniums and diminutive genitalia, pumped full of human cloning genes and fish tranquilizers, previously only available in Mark McGwire’s locker, are arriving.  So stay the H-E-double hockey sticks away from the Arena District for the next three days.

The Classic used to be a simpler pursuit - a contest filled with greased up bodies ripped from - ahem - spending too much time at the gym.  Not anymore.  Now there’s a full-on conference, replete with exposition hall, product demonstrations, and seminars.

Breakout sessions include: techniques for kicking sand in a weakling’s face and stealing his girlfriend; combating back acne; Spring 2008 Fashion Trends - Affliction vests; Alien vs. Predator - why we need two movies to figure out that Predator could take out any space insect who repeatedly gets beat up by a chick (a critical review and panel discussion hosted by two guys who would destroy James Lipton in arm wrestling); and “Beat the Founder”: a demonstration/competition sponsored by the U. S. Breaking Association for smashing concrete slabs with karate chops: fist, elbow and foot divisions (seriously, this one is real).

The daytime sessions are sold out, and the evening festivities of pushing over local twerps and impromptu Arena Football League discussions, which stretch from Brothers to BW3’s, are first-come first-served.  In all, it promises to be the best Classic yet, and a great weekend for locals to get the heck out of town.

 Kidding, of course.

Be a Great Social Climber

vertical.jpgSocial climbing in Columbus has never been easier.   In fact, several experts in the field have congregated in one great location and will gladly teach you how to reach new heights.

Where, you ask?  No, not at some stuffy country club.  Nor at an Ivy League Club alumni meeting.  But rather at Vertical Adventures on Columbus’ north side.

Most of the climbing at Vertical Adventures consists of top roped climbing (a climber is tied to a rope which passes through an anchor at the top of the wall and back down to the belayer or spotter).  However, the facility also offers bouldering (great for learning techniques and strength building) and leading (the most advanced climbing offered).

For just $25, anyone can visit Vertical Adventures and enroll in an introductory class.  No appointment, experience or partner is needed, though learning with a friend is typically more fun.  The fee covers your initial instruction, equipment and Day Pass.

Vertical Adventures also offers experiences for groups - team building, birthday parties and other outings.  Its a perfect way to elevate the status of both you and your friends!

After a visit to Vertical Adventures, one thing is certain - you’ll leave feeling “boulder” than when you arrived.

Vertical Adventures, 6295 Busch Blvd., Columbus, OH 43229.  614.888.8393

Oh Deer

dancing-deer.jpgHunting for a great new treat that’s actually worth the calories can be tough.  Add a kosher requirement to the mix and you may find yourself feeling like a deer in headlights.

Getting it in your local grocery store without spending too much doe…I mean dough, is even tougher.  But if you could somehow find your horn of plenty - and save a few bucks - it’d be a solution that you’d absolutely fawn over.

Look no further than the Dancing Deer Baking Company.

The products of Dancing Deer are known for “straight-up yummy-ness,” innovation, simple packaging, and, of course, high quality ingredients.  They blend traditional artisan baking with innovative flavor combinations to produce delicious baked from scratch products which are all-natural and Kosher (so endearing).

Their Molasses Clove Cookie won the food industry’s equivalent of the “Oscar” in 1997.  That same year, Dancing Deer received national recognition for making the “best cake in America.”

The company’s namesake was an antique shop in Bar Harbor, Maine, and its bakery is located in Boston.  But fortunately, selected products can be found in Columbus at Weiland’s Market.

Sounds like its time to boogie on over to Clintonville.

Weiland’s Gourmet Market, 3600 Indianola Avenue, Columbus, OH

Well Bread

bread.jpgDo your homemade sandwiches stack up to those in your favorites restaurants?   No?  Wonder why…

A good sandwich starts with great bread.  And Columbus bakeries have definitely reached the upper crust.

Le Chatelaine, Great Harvest Bread Co, and Omega Artisan Bakery probably all sound familiar.  Each offers a wide range of breads, rolls and other baked goods in both traditional and creative varieties.

However, east siders swear by Resch’s Bakery.  Walking through the door is like stepping back in time.  Take a number (so old-school) and browse the donuts, cookies, pastries and danishes.  But don’t leave without a loaf of Rye, Wheat, Challua or White.

Resch’s has been baking for nearly 100 years and doesn’t show any sign of slowing down.

So, no matter where you live, remember to buy good bread.  Its the yeast you can do.

Grin And Behr It

behr_logo2.gifMost people recognize painting as the quickest, easiest and most inexpensive way to completely transform a room in their home.  (Big smiley face).

However, khaki can quickly turn to cake-batter yellow.  And that green…  Well, let’s leave that to the Diaper Genie.  (Not so smiley face).

Selecting the correct color for your living room, kitchen, or bedroom can be an arduous process.  Fortunately, the paint pros at Behr have developed something to help.

The Behr Paint Your Place tool allows you to preview what a room will look like before cracking open that first can of Marvelous Mauve.

Start by choosing a color through Behr’s online ColorSmart system (which helps coordinate colors).   Then upload photos of the room you have decided to paint.  A few clicks later, the room is “virtually” painted.

The process is so simple, you’ll Behrly be able to contain yourself.

An annual $4.95 subscription allows unlimited photo views.  Visit Behr.com for a demo, registration information and additional details.

FaFa Fantasy

fafarazzi.jpgFebruary has many sports lovers hanging in limbo.  The NFL Football season - dunzo.  March Madness - still weeks away.

Fashionistas don’t fare much better.  Fashion Week has just concluded and Project Runway is approaching its finale.

However, the highly competitive world of Hollywood entertainment is just heating up.  So why not get in on the action?

Fafarazzi.com is a Fantasy Celebrity League site.  It is the celebrity gossip world’s answer to fantasy sports leagues.  And it couldn’t be easier to play.

You and your friends join a league or start one of your own (highly recommended).  You draft your favorite celebrities (Becks, Posh, J. Lo, etc.) to your team.  Your celebs score points by appearing in popular blogs and online entertainment news sources.  You trade or swap members of your team based on who is in the headlines.  Fafarazzi does the rest.

Columbus (Long) Weekend Agenda

Floral Video - Tips & Tricks

coxvideo.jpgYouScoop has something new for you - our first video production!

In our inaugural video, we visit Steven Cox Flowers and learn a few tricks of the trade.  Please take a few minutes to view the video at:

http://www.getyouscoop.com/videos/scox.htm

The YouScoop family extends a HUGE thank you to Steven and his team.  We greatly appreciate his willingness to share some of his ideas on floral arranging with us.

We look forward to sharing more original video content with you in the coming weeks.  And if you have an idea for a great “how to” video, send us a Scoop!  Steven Cox Flowers, 503 City Park Avenue, Columbus, OH.  614.224.6555

Write On

queenbee3.jpgYes, we definitely enjoy the convenience of the electronic age with our computers, WiFi access, iPhones , Blackberrys and more (hence, the existence of YouScoop).

And emails certainly serve a wonderful purpose (see above).

But sometimes, putting a pen to paper just seems right.

And when the “write” time comes, Columbus-based Queen Bee Paper Company has the perfect product for your personal correspondence.

Two young moms with a passion for all things paper met each other in Columbus in 2002.  They discovered their combined backgrounds in graphic design, illustration, and layout perfectly suited their shared interest in custom stationery, greeting cards and invitations.   Their first hand-made designs created some buzz and eventually led to the launch of The Queen Bee Paper Company.

Queen Bee now offers personalized stationery, notepads, invitations, and announcements for life’s special moments.  They also carry business cards, calling cards, address labels and gift tags.

Be sure to look at the latest designs in the “folded cards” section of stationery on their website (link below) - they are fun and fashionable.  Just write…

These Bags Are Fly

seagull.jpgStylish girls know the benefits of a great bag.  As do metrosexuals…

Yet another group might appreciate a well designed and stylish bag more than any other…  Yes, you guessed it (or probably not), Columbus’ couriers love a great bag.

CCAD grad and local artist Daniel McKewen started designing and making bags when his search for a great waterproof courier bag yielded no results.  After countless hours of refining his technique and process, he produced a quality bag he believed in.  And Seagull Bags was born.

Today, Seagull offers a wide range of sizes and styles to the messengers of the world, as well as any other person who could utilize a high quality, waterproof courier-style bag (aka everyone).  Daniel and his staff also love a challenge - they will design your bag with custom features and a one-of-a-kind design for a very reasonable fee.

Last year, Seagull snagged some major sponsorship deals, both in the U.S. and overseas.  In January of this year, they updated their equipment and are ready to take off.

Sew far, sew good.

Heart Felt

amyd.jpgCaring is so cool again (caring is the new black?).  And no one gets more attention these days than Mother Earth.

Join the movement with the help of Columbus-area artist AmyD.

Her crafty coffee sleeves will keep your hands safe from that piping hot organic soy latte.  Or even the standard house blend (one step at a time).

Amy got hooked on sewing in eighth grade home economics class and hasn’t stopped since that time.  We love her motto, “I make it.  You buy it.  Look pretty.”

Made from recycled soda bottles, not wool (vegan friendly), the double-layered felt sleeves come in a variety of styles, including Blue Heart, Sweet Love, Sweet Little Trees, Ohio, Brown Star and more.  And at just $6 each, it makes sense to buy several and keep them in your jacket pockets.

Seems like the perfect time to proudly wear your heart of your sleeve.

Selected styles available at Wholly Craft, 3171 North High Street, Columbus, OH.  614.447.3445.  Purchase on-line at amyd.etsy.com and madebyamyd.com.

Perfectly Undone

undone2.jpgAh, if certain things in life could simply be undone…     Believing all the cool kids were doing it.  Working too late.  “Enjoying” that extra martini.  And, of course, that little run-in with the law.

Fortunately, in Columbus, shopping can be.

Undone, in the heart of Grandview, offers a wonderful variety of shoes and intimates previously seen only in larger cities and fashion mags.  The store stocks lingerie items from designers including Ed Hardy, Vera Wang, Betsey Johnson, Cosabella, and Huit.

One of the faves for February is the Brigitte by Huit - a bra and undies set that is lacy, soft and sexy.  And, just in time for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday, the Brigitte collection includes a fabulous French apron skirt.  A little naughty, and a lot nice.

Or, for those who prefer to leave a bit more to the imagination, consider beautiful and silky chemises from Cosabella.  Many lucky ladies love them.

The boutique caters to intimate apparel enthusiasts and the guys and girls who love them.  So get to Undone and know you’ve done well.

A Real Show Stealer

urbanart.jpgColumbus now reigns as the Indie Art Capital of the World.  And today, the city has a new place to hang its crown.

The Urban Art Space, a new downtown gallery located at the city’s center, opens its doors today.  Headed by the Columbus Downtown Development Corporation and The Ohio State University, Urban Art Space will serve as part of a comprehensive plan to revitalize downtown.

The gallery encompasses 10,000 square feet of performance/exhibition space on the ground floor of the former Lazarus department store.  OSU College of the Arts Dean Karen Bell calls the location “a professional launching pad for the students, helping to bridge the gap between their academic and professional careers.”

The inaugural exhibition is Midnight Robbers: The Artists of Notting Hill Carnival, a groundbreaking installation curated by OSU Theatre Professor Lesley Ferris and Ruth Tompsett from Middlesex University in the UK.  The exhibition explores the historic context of the London Carnival and delves deep into the Carnival art form.

The show highlights the work of Carnival artists, including photographs, costume designs, costumes and a timeline of the history of Carnival.  And like the beloved Midnight Robber character of traditional carnival, the exhibition seeks to provoke and engage audiences, and underscore the cultural strategies that colonized people used through their carnival masquerades in earlier times.

Be sure to check out the new gallery soon - missing this show would be a crime.

OSU Urban Art Space, 50 West Town Street, Columbus, OH 43215.  Gallery opens today with a Grand Opening Reception planned for Friday, February 8th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM.  RSVP by calling 614.292.5171.

Cocoa Buffs

mjscandy.jpgDid you know that cocoa, from which chocolate is created, is thought to have originated in the Amazon at least 4,000 years ago?

Or that Hernando Cortez, in the late 1520s, discovered that mixing sugar, vanilla and spices to the unsweetened  Chocolatl drink consumed by Aztecs and Mayans would turn the beverage into a delicacy reserved for Spanish royalty?  (They kept it a secret for over 100 years!)

Or that Americans didn’t enjoy chocolate until 1755?

Well, perhaps it is time to spend less time learning about chocolate and more time tasting it.  MJ’s Candy Bar in Dublin can help.

This Friday, February 8th, MJ’s will host a chocolate tasting event at the store from 7 PM to 8 PM.  Guests will experience premium chocolates, including Venezuelan style Chuao Chocolate, Divine Chocolate from Germany, as well as Ohio’s own Harry London brand.

The cost is just $5 per person or $8 per couple.  Space is limited, so be sure to call to reserve your spot.

While there, be sure to browse the shop’s extensive candy selection - perfect for the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday.  And if you have little ones at home, ask for information about renting the store for a private party.  What could be sweeter?

Supern’t Bowl

superbowl.jpgTop Ten reasons NOT to watch the big game on Sunday night:

10.  Due to the writer’s strike, instead of hilarious Super Bowl ads, Budweiser is airing re-runs of their “Wuzzup?!” commercials.

9.  Would much rather see Tom Brady in his underwear and Gisele Bundchen get tackled by some big sweaty man, instead of the other way around.  Right?  Or is that just me?

8.  The really interesting Manning brother isn’t even in the game.  You know, Cooper.

7.  Heard that Coach Belichick likes to make home videos of the game.  Will just wait to get a copy of one of those.

6.  Because Tom Petty is the half time act.  Now that’s a wardrobe malfunction no one wants to see.

5.  Don’t want to listen to all the parallels that will be drawn to this year’s presidential race.  You know, team from Hillary’s (sort of) home state playing team from Romney’s (sort of) home state in John McCain’s (sort of) home state in a game played by guys who look (sort of) like Barack Obama and (a lot) like Mrs. Mike Huckabee.

4.  Just can’t justify missing any E! round-the-clock coverage of the vigil for Britney outside Cedar’s Sinai.

3.  As an Ohio State fan you have too many bad memories of that stadium.  Would prefer to watch it if it were being played in a place with better Buckeye mojo, like New Orleans or Jacksonville….wait.

2.  Might be hard to get folks at your neighborhood “Flavor of Love” season finale party to change the channel.

1.  Seriously, the first team to ever have a shot to go 19-0 playing a team trying to score the biggest upset in professional sports history.  Boring!  I mean, who’d want to watch that?

The Powers That V

yoga.jpgYou made some pledges in the New Year.  Exercise more.  Save more.  Generally lead a healthier life.

So far, perhaps not so good…

V Power Yoga wants to help.

On the first Monday of each month, the studio’s 6:30 AM mixed level yoga class is free of charge.

V Power yoga offers an eclectic system of yoga which is both vigorous and athletic.  It combines balancing poses, standing lunges, and sun salutations to remove toxins from the body.  All poses flow together through breath, music and heat which challenge participants’ strength, stamina and flexibility.

The studio is led by Julie Verhoff, a dedicated student of Ashtanga, Bikram and Vinyasa techniques.  Her unique and energetic approach has garnered a lot of attention and made her one of the most sought-after instructors in Columbus.

So after watching the big game this Sunday night, start the week off right with a Monday morning Power meeting.

Buy, Cell…Buy, Cell

blackberry.jpgNo, we are not watching the latest crazy reports from Wall Street on CNBC.

Rather, we’re thinking about great gifts for February 14th.

Wireless Business Solutions Group, a locally-owned Verizon Wireless Premium Dealer,  has stocked-up on the new Pink Blackberry Pearls and Red Blackberry 8830’s just in time for Valentine’s Day.

And the new phones are priced to sell (or is it buy?).  The Pink Pearl will cost just $99 after rebate.  Other models are equally affordable.  Better yet, the nice folks at Wireless Business Solutions Group will throw in a $50 Cameron Mitchell gift card with your purchase (some small print restrictions apply to both offers).

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with a new ring???

First come questions, then come answers,

Then come drinks as brain enhancers!

Ready to test your trivia skills?  Then tonight’s your night at Andyman’s Tree House.

Each Tuesday evening, Team Tim Trivia takes over the Tree House for a night of live trivia in Columbus.

Tonight, expect the competition to become very heated.  The topic?  Sex.

Teams of one to four people will compete in five rounds of 25 questions.   Categories will include sexual health, general sex and sexuality, battle of the sexes, and Team Tim (including non-sexual toughies like which band sucks more - Nickleback or Creed?).

In between rounds, team members will have time to enjoy refreshments and catch some fresh air (aka smoke) while the scores are tabulated.   Other games, like one-on-one elimination lightening rounds, will also be played.

At the end of the night, winning teams receive prizes from sponsors including Hoggy’s, Grandview Video, Studio 35, Lucky 13 Hair Salon, and others.  Tonight’s special sponsor is Planned Parenthood, so winners beware.

Be sure to recruit a team with some first-hand knowledge of sex.  Otherwise, you might be stumped.

Forward Thinking

thinktank.jpgOhio business legend Charles F. Kettering once said, “My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.”

Suddenly inspired?  Keep reading.

Columbus turns 200 years old in 2012 and intends to celebrate in a big way.  Better yet, city leaders want to hear your ideas on how to commemorate the occasion.

Join Mayor Michael B. Coleman and the 2012 Bicentennial Commission Co-Chairs Dr. Gordon Gee, Abigail Wexner and Bishop Timothy Clarke for the 2012 Citizen Summit tomorrow evening at the Columbus Convention Center Terrace Ballroom.

They’re not talking fireworks and parades.  Think big picture.

The 2012 Project’s mission is to create ambitious and innovative ideas, initiatives and goals that will be achieved or started by 2012.  Ideas that will continue to attract talented and creative people to Columbus and make our city a great place to live, learn and lead a legendary life.

Registration starts at 5 pm.  The program, featuring inspirational speakers and wireless touchpad devices for all attendees (interactive A/V!), runs from 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

Admission is free, but RSVPs are required at columbus.gov/columbus2012.

And don’t forget your shades.  You know why…

Just What The Doctor Ordered

hypno1.jpgThe symptom - a dull ache in the bottom of your belly.

The diagnosis -a boring winter weekend in Columbus.

The remedy - a night of gut-busting laughter with  J. Medicine Hat.

Starting this evening, J. brings his lewd, raunchy and utterly unforgettable show to The Funny Bone for a four night gig.

J. started on the comedy circuit over 20 years ago as a stand-up comic.  Then, after a successful stint on Star Search, appearances on Showtime, HBO, VH-1, and MTV followed.  But not until he opened for a hypnotist in the early ’90s did he have the ‘light bulb moment.”

Add hypnosis to comedy and hilarity ensues.

Now, colleges, casinos, and comedy clubs around the country count on J. to pack the house and outperform any other entertainer on the circuit.

Looks like we’ll take our medicine.  And like it.

We Love Hicks

boston.jpgPack your bags, it is time to visit the Hicks.

No, we’re not touring the country’s indoor water parks.  Nor are we attending an LSU Football reunion. (Don’t be such a drongo.)

We are off to Boston to visit Gilly Hicks, the newest brand from Columbus’ own Abercrombie & Fitch.

Gilly Hicks, located in the upscale Natick Collection, brings Aussie-inspired casual wear and undies to the sheilas of the USA.  Early reports say the store is a bobby dazzler.  Check out the (NSFW) promotional video at gilleyhicks.com for some swimming in the nuddy.

After hitting the biggies at Natick, Boston’s boutiques will leave you equally chuffed.  Dress stocks the latest from 3.1 Philip Lim, Vanessa Bruno, Lofli, Wayne, and much more.  Blokes need to look no further than the legendary Louis Boston (stop by the grooming salon on the third floor for a Dad ‘n Dave).  And for the nippers back home, Tadpole carries the city’s most adorable clothes, toys, and gear - including Bugaboo prams.

Feeling peckish after all the shopping?  Stephanie’s on Newbury reigns as the quintessential lunch spot for tourists and locals alike.  Later, head to South End for a selection of Boston’s finest restaurants.  Start the evening at B&G Oysters for super fresh seafood, or for bistro grub, Franklin Cafe or Gaslight.  End the night at Beehive for drinks and jazz, cabaret or burlesque - you will almost certainly stumble home plonked.

Speaking of home (away from home), check in to the sophisticated and stylish XV Beacon hotel - always voted one of the city’s best.  For another boutique experience for a few less dollars, try grabbing some shut eye at the Nine Zero hotel in downtown’s Ladder District.  Or, for those flush with quids, book a room at Taj Boston, the city’s Grand Dame property with a traditional and classic style.

From go to whoa, you’ll be a happy little Vegemite.

Paella, ella, ella

barcelona_logo.gifEh, eh, eh?

Fortunately for Columbus foodies, the rain in Spain did not dampen the spirit of two overseas travelers from Central Ohio last year.

Barcelona proprietor Scott Heimlich and Chef Paul Yow visited Spain in late November to research Spanish cuisine and wine.  And lucky for us, they’re now ready to share their developments.

Next Tuesday, January 29th, Scott and Chef Paul will host an evening of food and conversation on the culinary delights of Spain.  Chef Paul will serve a six-course menu featuring three family style tapas, two family style paellas, and a traditional Spanish dessert.

Expect some pouring as well…  Spanish wines will be paired with the meal.

The evening costs just $50 per person, all inclusive .  Seating is very limited, so reservations are a must.

Barcelona Restaurant & Bar, 263 E. Whittier Street, Columbus, OH.  614.443.3699.  Credit cards will be charged when reservations are made.

Busted?!

tompaul.jpgLooking for a head-turning addition to your tabletop collection? But also something capable of withstanding your own battle of the bulge…

Look no further than Thomas Paul’s collection of stylish melamine plates.

Melamine had a very devoted following in this country in the 1950s and ’60s, then took a tumble when polyethylene plastic - think Tupperware - soared in popularity.

Fortunately, Thomas Paul, along with several other designers, has rediscovered the benefits of melamine (lightweight, shatterproof, dishwasher-safe, and kid friendly) and produced a fabulous collection of plates and trays. Better yet, working with the material allows Mr. Paul to keep prices very affordable!

On the down side, we couldn’t find any stores carrying the line in Columbus (if you know of one, PLEASE let us know). However, we feel confident at least one of our savvy shop owners will step up to the plate sometime soon.

See styles at www.thomaspaul.com. Available for purchase online at Velocity.

Eye Eye, Captain

vintage.jpgCharting the waters of fashion requires a keen eye.

Add vintage to the mix, and only the most seasoned veterans will survive.

Fortunately, the rank and file of Greater Columbus have a very capable leader in Captain Betty.

Captain Betty’s, a small shop located in the heart of downtown Delaware, offers an impressive selection of vintage clothing and accessories for both men and women.

Gals will find fabulous furs, impeccable formalwear, handbags, jewelry, hats and much more. And for gents? Two smaller rooms in the back of the store house groovy leather jackets and sport coats, tuxedos (including ruffled tux shirts), suits, slacks, military blazers, designer shoes, and skinny ties.

Labels range from catalog to couture, depending on the piece. And shoppers can sail all the way back to the 1920s, or simply rewind to the totally awesome ’80s.

Each and every piece in the collection offers a glimpse back in time. However, don’t wait too long to cruise to Delaware. After many years in Central Ohio, Betty will be relocating her shop to Woodstock, NY, this spring.

Captain Betty, we salute you!

Captain Betty’s, 73 North Sandusky Street, Delaware, OH. 740.363.6739. Open Noon to 5pm, Wednesday through Sunday. Cash and checks accepted.

Get Outta Town

plane.jpgThere are plenty of reasons to love Columbus - affordable housing, a steady economy, the Ohio State Buckeyes, and, let’s be honest, the ability to escape CMH for a vacation.

But before you pack your bags, be sure you have the best resources at your fingertips.  The following websites will make traveling a snap.

Instead of searching for flights on agencies like Expedia or Travelocity, try itasoftware.com.  Developed by MIT scientists, the search engine is not biased towards certain airlines.  Though you cannot purchase tickets directly, the site provides an impressive list of flight options for a given itinerary.  Other sites, including Kayak and Sidestep, also perform a comprehensive search of numerous online travel agencies and airlines.  And don’t forget Columbus’ own Skybus, now offering flights to Chicago, Philadelphia and Niagara Falls/Toronto.

Since the best seats on a plane vary by airline and aircraft, head to SeatGuru to ensure you are sitting pretty on your next flight.  And to determine the right frequent flier program to earn those oh-so-elusive freebies, compare plans at WebFlyer

Planning to leave our shores?  Itasoftware.com offers international flight information, but lowcostairlines.org will find no-frills flights in any part of the world.  WhichBudget also does a great job finding low-cost fares, especially in Europe, while Vayama brings many international flights and schedules to the web for the first time.

Overseas travelers can find reliable health and vaccination information for more than 220 countries from tripprep.com.  While healthy, avoid an international getaway when stores and sites might be closed by visiting bank-holidays.com.  It lists bank holidays around the world, as well as elections, announced strikes, festivals, sports events and more.

Finally, since life can turn complicated faster than you can say sayonara, compare the costs and coverages of trip insurance providers at insuremytrip.com.

Bon Voyage!

Love My ‘Shmere

What better way to start the day than with the perfect ’shmere?  Lavender, or acorn, or crimson, or….

Sound a bit strange?

Well, that’s because we are talking less about eating breakfast and more about getting dressed for it.

From the company that brought the best (and reasonably priced) bespoke suits to Columbus, now comes the finest cashmere sweaters and overcoats.

Astor & Black recently inked a deal with one of the country’s premier outfitters of cashmere sweaters.  Choose from crews, v-necks and zip-ups in every color under the sun.  Prices start at under $200 - amazing considering that nearly identical pieces in a premium department store would cost triple that amount.

Even better, the A&B team also offers custom-fitted overcoats in cashmere from the ultra-luxe Loro Piana firm.  As expected, you personalize the coat to your exact specifications, including color, length, lining and buttons.  All for less than some boxy and unflattering off-the-rack wool shell at the mall.

Expect the same amazing quality and fit as found in their custom suits and blazers.  And guys, if you haven’t had the opportunity to own an Astor & Black original, be sure to try one.  We understand you’ll never want to wear anything else.

So wake up and smell the coffee.  And immediately schedule an appointment with Astor & Black.

Contact a sales professional at 614.857.9000 or info@astorandblack.com.  See all locations at astorandblack.com

Find Your Mojo

opensign.jpgDid the holidays turn into a solo mission?  And the boudoir become not-so-shagadelic?

Have you lost your mojo?  Ouch, baby.  Very ouch.

Lucky for you, the MoJoe Lounge opens tonight in German Village.

Occupying the space next door - and now connected to - Cup O’ Joe, the lounge will most certainly become a relaxed and stylish place to sip cocktails and nosh on small plates.  The perfect spot for meeting old friends and making new ones.

MoJoe Lounge opens its doors to neighbors and guests this evening from 6 pm to 9 pm with complimentary coffee and menu samples.

Regular hours will be conducive to both lunch and a late-night rendezvous.  Yeah, baby!

Cup O’ Joe & MoJoe Lounge, 627 S. Third Street, Columbus, OH 43206.  Open daily at 11 am and until 1 am Monday through Thursday, until 2 am Friday and Saturday, and until midnight on Sunday.

A Less Stress Address

stressvet2.gifIt’s time for the furry family member’s regular check-up.  No, not Aunt Mildred (we all have one), but rather the four-legged friend who makes the house a home.

Finding three hours on the calendar?  Riiiight…  Pet-proofing the car?  Noooooo problem…  Waiting in an office with scared and sick animals?  Perrrrrfect…

Oh, bother!

Fortunately, Greater Columbus has an alternative with Dr. Jennifer Taylor’s HouseCalls for Dogs & Cats practice.

Dr. Taylor’s traveling veterinary service provides medical care to pets throughout Central Ohio in the comfort and convenience of their own homes.  HouseCalls offers a broad range of essential services including diagnostic tests, examinations and treatments.

Dr. Taylor graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, so your pets are definitely in capable hands.  And if animals could talk, we bet her cat, named Scat, and two dogs, Delilah and Xavier, would provide a ringing endorsement.

HouseCalls pledges to keep costs very competitive with other vets in the area.  There is a flat travel charge for each visit (regardless of the number of animals), but HouseCalls will gladly split it if you can recruit a neighbor or two to coordinate appointments.

So chill out and schedule your next appointment with Dr. Jennifer Taylor - The Less Stress Vet.

HouseCalls for Dogs & Cats, PO Box 20553, Columbus, OH 43220  614.457.8761

Smack Dab in the Middle

lunchmiddlechild.jpgNutritionists and doctors call breakfast the most important meal of the day (classic overachiever).

Meanwhile, dinner receives all of the accolades (spoiled brat) .

That leaves lunch as the awkward middle child, always begging for attention.

Fortunately, several dishes around metro Columbus deserve the (shared) spotlight.

For a no-frills lunch on a tight budget, head to Bexley’s famed Rubino’s Pizzafor a sausage and banana pepper sub sandwich - only served at lunch.  Or, from the opposite side of the world, try the Banh Mi “sub” at Mi Mi Cafe in Columbus Square or Lac Viet in the North Market. Both are heavy on flavor and light on the wallet.

Feeling a little loco? Order the nachos at La Hacienda Real.  No matter how you top them, you’ll crave mas.

For those following the green movement, ditch the ‘wich and make the switch.  A Benevolence Salad accompanied by a hearty slice of Highlands bread from Benevolence Cafe will certainly fill the bill. Meanwhile, the Grilled Chicken and Artichoke Salad might just outshine its famous sandwich cousins at Katzinger’s Deli.

The pork dumplings from Ying’s Teahouse and Yum Yum, 4312 N. High Street, in Clintonville definitely deserve the buzz they have received, but remember patience is a virtue when dining there (Chelsea, that’s you).  Fans of “the other white meat” will also want to try the Carnitas at Cuco’s Taqueriaand the Calle Ocho sandwich (ironically, #7 on the menu) at Banana Bean Cafe.

Sushi lovers shouldn’t miss the Spicy Scallop Roll at Asian Gourmetin Stoneridge Plaza.  And noodle fanatics need to try Pad Thai from Happy Dragon (request extra spicy) in German Village or Shokuin Grandview.

Finally, for the traditionalists, nothing beats a burger, fries and shake at UA’s Chef-O-Nette or a loaded Jumbo Dog with tater tots from Village Coney, just east of German Village.  Both are simply great.

Lunch - definitely the smartest, coolest and most popular meal of the day!

Treemendous Savings

Naturally, it is the perfect time to save!

Trail to the Chief

iowa1.jpg“There are known knowns…there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things that we do not know.  But there are also unknown unknowns - the ones we don’t know we don’t know.”  - Former Secretary of Defense (and modern-day philosopher) Donald Rumsfeld.

Okay, let’s start with the “known knowns.”  We know that 383 days from today, somebody will stand on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, raise his or her right hand, and file a change of address to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue with the Post Office.  We also know the process to choose that person starts today with the Iowa Caucuses.

As for the “known unknowns,” we know we don’t know who that person is going to be.  One Iowa Republican poll says Huckabee, another says Romney, and pundits say don’t count out McCain.  Meanwhile, one Democrat poll says Obama, another says Clinton, and high-priced hair stylists are backing Edwards.

But the “unknown unknowns:” why the heck do people in Iowa get to pick the President before everybody else?  And what in the name of Ray Kinsella is a caucus?

Iowa goes first because it always has, at least since 1972.  And since that year, candidates for President have focused on the state’s 99 counties to become the front-runner headed into primary elections in the 49 other states.

That’s the easy part.  As for what a caucus is, well, that gets a little fuzzier.  In Iowa, instead of just going to the poll and hitting a computer screen that may or may not count, like we do in Ohio, caucus goers get together with other voters in their precinct, supporters make a pitch on their candidate’s behalf, and voters write down their choice on a blank piece of paper.

Once all of the choices have been written down and added up, representatives of the candidate who receives the most votes are elected to go to their respective county convention to vote for their candidate.  From there, the winners go to a congressional district convention and cast a vote for the candidates they were elected to support.  Then, the supporters of the candidate in the congressional district convention go onto the state party convention to elect the state’s nominee.

The process gets even more complicated on the Democrat side, but we trust you already know more than you ever wanted to know about what you didn’t know.  YouScoop is just glad to live in a March primary state with absentee voting.

To determine which candidate is right for you, take the VoteMatch quiz or the Select A Candidate quiz

New Year’s Resolution - Go to AA

aquatic.jpgThe Columbus holiday party circuit took its toll.  There were parties with friends, parties with colleagues, time with the family, and New Year’s Eve.  Perhaps a resolution to visit AA is in order.

Aquatic Adventures is located in the premier aquatic/scuba center in the Midwest.  The facility boasts a 14,000 square foot natatorium with two pools - a 25 yard six lane lap pool and a multi-level scuba training pool.

Aquatic Adventures offers a wide variety of scuba training and certifications through PADI and SDI/TDI.  Sound intimidating?  Check out the Discover Scuba Program - a one time Scuba “Experience,” allowing anyone interested in scuba diving to try it in a pool setting without committing to a full certification course.

scuba.jpgAquatic Adventures also offers a variety of non-scuba related activities, including lap swimming, snorkeling, swimming lessons for all ages, American Red Cross classes, birthday parties (scuba and non-scuba), and more.

Best of all, Aquatic Adventures can help you put your new skills to use.  Choose from pre-organized dive vacations (upcoming destinations include the Turks & Caicos, Florida Keys, Belize, and Curacao) or create a customized dive experience of your own.

Last Minute Luxuries

snap-t.jpgTwas the weekend before Christmas, and all through your house, not a single gift was wrapped, not even a computer mouse.

Stop. Don’t even think about re-gifting that mouse (especially since it wasn’t even a gift). YouScoop to the rescue.

For him: Help him cheat the chill with a Patagonia reversible Snap-T jacket in red, green, or black ($140). Available at Outdoor Source in the Kingsdale Shopping Center. Help him see stars - pick up the incredible Celestron SkyScout Personal Planetarium ($399). It can identify virtually any celestial object with its advanced GPS technology and is available at area Brookstone stores. Or, help him conquer the curves with a gift certificate to the Acura High Performance Driving School at the acclaimed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course ($575).

mindycherry2.jpgFor her: Wrap her in warmth with an amazingly soft (and affordable) fleece scarf with contrasting trim from Mindy Cherry ($42.50). Available at Helen Winnemore in German Village. Or, wrap her in seaweed with a gift card for an H2O Spa Package ($263) from the Charles Penzone Family of Salons. Locations throughout Central Ohio. Better yet, wrap her in jewelry with a charming and unique necklace by designer Love Heals (around $400). Available at Collier West in the Short North.

jeffthomas.jpgFor kids: Answer their wishes by bringing home kids’ best friend - a brand new pet. And maintain your sanity by making it a life-size stuffed animal dog ($45) or mini horse ($110) from Melissa & Doug. Available at Jeffrey Thomas in the Kingsdale Shopping Center.

So off to the stores, with your gift list in sight. Wish Happy Christmas to all, and enjoy shopping tonight.

HW + OW = WOW

housewine.jpgWith the opening of House Wine in Old Worthington, the charming neighborhood has added a great new neighbor.

The owners opened House Wine to make wine buying fun, simple and interactive by focusing on education and exploration in a relaxed atmosphere.

The shop’s clean, casual and chic design makes shopping a breeze.  The staff has arranged wines by country and region in one area of the store, and by suggested food pairings in another section.  Better yet, the 250 labels in stock have been classified by color and character and stylishly tagged with recognizable icons for easy review.

Luckily, House Wine allows parched patrons to taste a wide variety of wines in the shop.  Their state-of-the-art wine dispenser makes self-service sampling simple.  Or, for a minimal corkage fee, feel free to open a bottle of your choice.

Each Thursday evening between 6 pm and 8:30 pm, House Wine hosts a $15 per person tasting.  The “taste at your pace” events do not require a reservation and will highlight wines by region, grape or winery.  Tonight, House Wine will pour wines from Italy, while sparkling wines will be featured next Thursday.

Looking to entertain a group of friends or colleagues?  House Wine welcomes formal or informal tastings.

Volume Reading

You love music. And you like the idea of reading… Now, you can enjoy the best of both worlds with the 33 1/3 Book Series.

The concept is quite simple; writers, critics, musicians, and a few others are invited to write a short book (pocket-sized and typically under 150 pages) with a favorite album of theirs in mind.

Choosing an album is the only guideline, allowing for a wide variety of interpretations and subject matters. For example, readers who opt for The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, by Andy Miller, get a song-by-song account of how and why this classic album came to fruition. But those who pick up Meat is Murder, written by Joe Pernice and based on the classic Smiths album, are treated to a novella inspired by the album.

You’ll find books in the series dedicated to familiar classics such as Pet Sounds, Led Zeppelin IV, and Highway 61 Revisited. But, titles also include Guided By Voices’ Bee Thousand, Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation, and Radiohead’s OK Computer. A little something for everybody.

With nearly 60 titles available and more scheduled for 2008, you could find yourself a truly dedicated reader.  Music to your English professor’s ears.

Select titles available at the Wexner Center Store, 1871 North High Street (OSU Campus), Columbus, OH. 614.292.2685.  For the full collection, visit Barnes & Noble online.

Moy’s Choice

Decisions, decisions, decisions. You confront them all day long.

What to wear…freeway or back roads…coffee or soda…and, of course, what to have for dinner.

Let Moy’s Restaurant relieve the dinner dilemma with a unique four (or more) course Chinese tasting menu.

Known by food lovers for staples like BBQ Roast Pork, Hot & Sour Soup, Beef with Pickled Mustard, Fried Kwai Tiu and Chicken with String Bean, the kitchen at Moy’s can also prepare a tasty meal of specialties not found on the menu.

Simply call the restaurant at least two days in advance to reserve a tasting, provide your budget information (starting at $50/person) and any food restrictions, and let Moy’s do the rest.

After your meal, you’ll understand why choosy Chinese lovers choose Moy’s.

Moy’s, 1994 N. High St., Columbus, OH (on OSU Campus next to Buckeye Donuts). Call Berlina to schedule a tasting menu at 614.297.7722. Moy’s does not serve alcohol.

Please Make Scents

Is providing the musical accompaniment to the song “Beans, beans, the magical fruit” your idea of DIY aromatherapy?  Gross.

It is time to graduate from middle school and use some common scents.  Or better yet, uncommon scents.  And the staff at The Candle Lab has the resources to help.

As Columbus’ newest candle company,  The Candle Lab produces wonderful candles with pure and fragrant scents.  Founded in 2005 on the idea that “freshly poured natural candles should be available to everyone,” The Candle Lab offers dozens of candles for purchase off the shelves.  Perfect for a last minute gift.

For the more advanced candle aficionado, the store also provides the opportunity for customers to pour their own.  Feel free to be nosey and sample each of the 120+ scents, from African Violet all the way to Woodpile.

For a wax to the max experience, The Candle Lab also offers private pouring parties.  After regular business hours, the store can become a private candle lounge, allowing each guest to create and pour their own custom candle.  The store provides the soy-based wax, cotton paper wicks, and pure fragrance oils.  You supply the food and beverages.  What a memorable way to entertain your snootiest friends and colleagues.

Browse scents here.  And remember, at The Candle Lab, the customer always nose best.

Feel the Wrath

You finally got the nerve to ask for a date - dinner, Friday night, 8 o’clock.

Car clean? Yep. Sheets clean? Affirmative. Look good? Heck yeah.

You walk into the restaurant and the guy standing next to you is wearing the same outfit. What a way to kill your buzz.

Next time, beat the odds with something from WRATH ARCANE.

Two friends from Cleveland started the label last year and sold through their first run in just two weeks. Since then, the company has grown into an international menswear label, in spite of the many challenges it faces by keeping its roots in Northeast Ohio.

In fact, the founders firmly believe the geographic and economic obstacles they have tackled fuel WRATH ARCANE’s message. They intend to offer an alternative to the influence of life’s “Big Labels” and remind people that changing their environment for the better will ultimately improve their lives.

With a literal translation of “secret anger” or “forgotten rage,” WRATH ARCANE sounds pretty serious. However, with their very fresh approach to contemporary streetwear, they just might become a Big Label one day soon.

Available at Sole Classics, 765 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio.

Proof Pawsitive

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  And when it comes to your dog, you could fill a library.

Turn one of those photos into something much more valuable with the help of local artist Manon Doyle.

Manon has been active in the arts scene in both Central Ohio and Scottsdale for several years.  She first achieved success with mosaics, then started Hoochie Poochie Studios after friends flipped over her painting of the family dog.  The rest is history.

After talking with the owner to learn more about her subject, Manon does a wood burning of the animal (based on a photo or two) with a poem along the border .  Next, she paints the birch “canvas” with acrylic paint and seals it with a protective varnish.  The finished painting comes ready to hang with hardware installed on the back.

Prices vary with the size of the painting.  The result?  Words cannot describe…

Ho-Ho-Hostess

Popularity has it perks. And over the next couple of weeks, it means receiving invitations to all of the best holiday parties in town.

The down side - having to channel your inner-Santa to think of the perfect gift for your hostess or host.

Fortunately, we’ve been making a list (and checked it twice) to ease your shopping conundrum. Better yet, every item can be wrapped-up for under $40.

For the domestic doyenne, head to the Short North’s Ivy Hill boutique for a hostess apron from Sommer Designs ($36). Generously sized with extra long contrasting ties, the aprons are handmade with the finest fashionable fabrics. Styles range from retro funky to contemporary classic.

For the host wound tighter than Scrooge’s gift budget, the recipe for a good time probably includes plenty of wine. Faye at Hausfrau Haven recommends several reds, perfect for the impending North Pole chill. For an amazing value, look no further than Ravenswood Vintner’s Blend, on sale for just $9.99. Titus Zinfandel ($25.99) is dryer and more serious than other zins, while Simi Landslide ($33.99) delivers a smooth and silky boutique-style wine from a larger producer.

For those with constant visions of sugar-plums in their heads, visit Pistacia Vera for the sweetest boxes of treats. Pick-up a festive variety of Parisian macarons ($15), or some goodies to make the post-soiree clean-up more bearable. The “morning” assortment ($34) includes a banana macadamia nut cake, six orange zest anise biscotti and the choice of a bag of signature dessert roast coffee or a selection of Les Palais des Thes teas.

And finally, for the consumate do-gooder, recognize their efforts with a charitable gift made in their name. The Mid Ohio Food Bank offers a Holiday Ornament Program ($15 and up) with proceeds helping to feed hungry families in Central Ohio. The Share-A-Night program ($25 and up) supports the Ronald McDonald House’s mission to serve as home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children, while the Capital Area Humane Society’s Honor Giving initiative (any donation amount) raises funds to prevent cruelty and promote responsible care for animals.

Cheers! And to all a good night.

Frugal 411

You’re a budgeter - for natural resources, time, and most important, money.   You’ve never met a penny that couldn’t be pinched.

You also couldn’t recall your best friend’s phone number for a million bucks (talk about a lot of pennies).  That is what contact lists are for.   As for addresses……forget about it.

Unfortunately, your greatest strength (stretching the dollar) and weakness (remembering vital info) often collide when away from home.  And while all major wireless carriers offer 411 service, the fees charged per call make you see red.

Google to the rescue.  Simply text the business listing you need to 466453 (Google on most keypads).  Within seconds, the geniuses at Google reply with a text message containing the name, full address and phone number of the requested business.

Even better, you can utilize the service for more than retrieving addresses and phone numbers.  Google SMS offers weather information, sports scores, movie listings, directions, maps, flight updates and so much more .  All for free (text message fees apply).  Visit sms.google.com for detailed information.

Yet another thumbs up for Google.

Happy F#*@ing Holidays

Ah, the joys of the holiday season: relegated to the last row in the parking lot, ”assisted” by seasonal sales staff, required to attend the company party, and fruitcake.

Its enough to quickly turn holiday cheer into holiday jeer.  And you always wear your true feelings on your sleeve.

This year, try your lapel instead.

On Paper has stocked a variety of NSFW pins to express your darker feelings this season.  With ratings ranging from PG-13 (Wanker) to NC-17 (the C-word), the pins will certainly make a statement.  When clustered in groups of two or three, they might even push the limits of free speech!

Fortunately, the pins only measure about 1.5 inches in diameter.  That means only those people in stocking range will get the message.  Oh yeah, and the family bumping its way down the sidewalk with a double stroller and shopping bags.

At just $2 apiece, it has never been more affordable to speak your mind.  Now you just need to lift it out of the gutter.  Remember the reason for the season!

Gotta Get to Gingham

Good golly Ms. Molly, you’re certainly on the ball.

The Brown Bag Deli, a German Village institution known for great sandwiches, soups and dinner specials, recently welcomed a new neighbor.   And what a sweet neighbor it is.

Bakery Gingham transformed Brown Bag’s former retail wine space into a super cute dessert emporium selling cookies, biscotti, granola bars, buckeyes, and, best of all, cupcakes.  Its philosophy is to keep things simple and comfortable, while only using the freshest ingredients.  In fact, owner and baker Amanda Ellis prides herself that everything on the menu is pronounceable, recognizable, and delectable.

Bakery Gingham currently offers four cupcake classics everyday - Grandpa’s Coffee, Haute Chocolate, Snowball, and Ultra-Violet White.  Of course, that is just the tip of the icing.  Cupcake of the day flavors include Keylime, Funky Monkey, Dreamscicle, Buckeye Nation and many more.

Bakery Gingham can also assist with any full-size cake needs.  Amanda studied cake-making with one of the country’s top cake designers and enjoys working with clients to create edible masterpieces for weddings and other special events.  Please allow seven days for cake and large quantity cupcake orders.

The Brown Bag Deli and Bakery Gingham will welcome hungry Village people this Sunday evening for Village Lights, a night of shopping, dining and strolling through the luminary-lighted streets of German Village.  Be sure to stop by for a treat - you’ll be plaid you did.

Don’t Fake It

Some things in life just should not be faked.  Designer handbags, the Big O, sincerity, and……Christmas trees.

Did you know the celebrating of Christmas with a real tree has been a tradition for over 400 years?  In fact, at one time, all Christmas trees were cut from natural stands (or straight out of the forest).  As you can imagine, these wild trees looked nothing like today’s professionally grown and sheared trees (yet another benefit of good grooming).

At the Sugargrove Tree Farm in Ashland, the whole family can participate in selecting and cutting a tree.  The fun begins with the wagon ride into the fields (horse drawn this weekend).  After choosing and cutting the perfect tree with saws provided by the farm, Sugargrove’s drivers return to the field to pick up you and your tree, then head back to the heated barn where everyone can enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and a cookie.

The staff will unload your tree from the wagon, shake out the dead needles and bale it up to allow for easy transportation and set up.  For die hard city slickers, pre-cut trees are available close to the barn for your convenience.  Sugargrove cuts the trees weekly to ensure the pre-cut tree is nearly as fresh as if you had cut it yourself.  They offer pre-cut Fir trees up to 12’ tall.

A few hours spent at the Sugargrove Tree Farm will not only yield a great evergreen tree, but also a new and memorable family tradition.  Just ask the family who owns Sugargrove - they have spent six generations on the farm.  For real.

It Peels So Good

The spooky images of Halloween have finally faded from your home. The extra bags of candy “magically” disappeared from the kitchen, while the jack-o-lanterns were swept from the porch (about time).

Now its on to Thanksgiving. A day of cooking, eating, cleaning, eating, football-watching and, yes, more eating. Oy, sounds like a lot of work.

Managing the holidays always turns tricky - perhaps its time for one more treat.

Look to the Charles Penzone Family of Salons for a seasonally-appropriate offering. Designed to transform skin and please the senses with power straight from the patch, the exfoliating and rejuvenating Pumpkin Peel Facial will leave the skin feeling flawless. Even better, the Pumpkin Peel is an all-natural formula rich in vitamins and includes the perfect exfoliating masque.

So, before the madness begins, pamper yourself with Penzone’s pumpkin peel.  After all, it is the one pumpkin treat that won’t cost you a thing this season. In calories that is.

Mad About Ewe…

“..lost in your eyes, mad about love, ewe and I.”

Belinda, who knew your song could sound so cheesey?

Apparently, Katzinger’s did. The famed German Village deli and specialty food shop will host Mad About Ewe, a tasting of sheep’s milk cheese on Wednesday, November 14th at 6:30 pm. The event will pair eight selections of sheep’s milk cheese with Elevator beers - not a baaaaaaad idea.

For just $18.95 per person, you can bet the farm you’ll get your money’s worth.

Katzinger’s, 475 S. Third Street, Columbus, Ohio. Call 614.228.3354 for Mad About Ewe reservations.

NYC - Get to Know SoHo

Downtown Gotham definitely draws a crowd. From locals shopping their neighborhood “mall,” to foodies enjoying some savory fare, to celebs hiding in swanky hotels, SoHo (including neighboring NoLIta) has it all.

SHOP: SoHo is home to some of the greatest shopping in NYC (or the world, for that matter!). For gents, SEAN(132 Thompson Street) offers great shirts, sweaters, scarves and more in big, bold colors. JOHN VARVATOS’ (122 Spring Street) great American style feels just right in the City, while PAUL SMITH (142 Greene Street) and TED BAKER (107 Grand Street) showcase their British-chic looks on this side of the pond. For great shirts and suits, visit the always friendly SEIZE sur VINGT (243 Elizabeth Street) as well as their more casual off-shoot, GROUPE 16 sur 20, just a few doors away (267 Elizabeth Street). Fans of vintage must shop WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND (351 West Broadway), but don’t forget the platinum card. Meanwhile, INA Men (262 Mott Street) stocks gently used designer goods at a wallet-friendly discount.

For the ladies, the downtown post of CATHERINE MALANDRINO (468 Broome Street) can prove very dangerous to the pocketbook (more on that later…). Super cool TORY by Tory Burch (257 Elizabeth Street) makes even the most seasoned shopper smile, while SIGERSON MORRISON (28 Prince Street) serves as a shrine to the shoe-devoted. Downtown attitude and style prevail at PASTEC (459 Broome), DOSA (107 Thompson Street) and ERICA TANOV (204 Elizabeth Street), but vintage rules at RESURRECTION (217 Mott Street). INA Women (101 Thompson Street) gives the “It” girls’ designer wardrobes a second life at a great discount.

The big guns of fashion also call SoHo home. PRADA (575 Broadway) hired architect-of-the-moment Rem Koolhaas to design its downtown flagship, just a stone’s throw from the MARC JACOBS (163 Mercer Street) boutique. BLOOMINGDALE’S (504 Broadway) opened a SoHo branch, following in the footsteps of BURBERRY (131 Spring Street) and CHANEL (139 Spring Street). The RALPH LAUREN store (381 West Broadway) stocks multiple lines from the designer, while RRL (31 Prince Street) focuses on the western-inspired label. ZARA (580 Broadway) and CLUB MONACO (520 Broadway) bring style to the masses, though H&M (515 & 558 Broadway) and UNIQLO (546 Broadway) do it for even less money!

Search for the latest must-have bag at LOUIS VUITTON (116 Greene Street), or carry something more unique from PETER HERMANN (118 Thompson Street) or JAMIN PUECH (247 Elizabeth Street). Meanwhile, accessorize with fabulous finds at ME & RO (241 Elizabeth Street) or TED MUEHLING (27 Howard Street).

Martha swears by the selection of tabletop and home accessories at GLOBAL TABLE (107 Sullivan Street). Don’t miss cutting-edge style for the home at MOSS (146 Greene Street), M at Mercer (49 Mercer Street) and BDDW (5 Crosby Street). And be inspired by the mosaic artistry at BISAZZA MOSAICO (43 Greene Street) and urban kitchen and bath design at BOFFI (31 1/2 Grand Street).

Before you drop from all the shopping, pick up some items for the little ones back at home from MAKIE (109 Thompson Street) or TRUST FUND BABY (239 Elizabeth Street). Great playthings abound at KID ROBOT (126 Prince Street) and PYLONES (69 Spring Street), while a box of KEE’s Chocolates (80 Thompson) might be the best thank you gift grandma and grandpa have ever received for their babysitting service.

Eat: Don’t skip breakfast, the so-called most important meal of the day, especially since BALTHAZAR (80 Spring Street), the quintessential French Bistro, and the CUPPING ROOM (359 West Broadway), more like your favorite neighborhood place, both open their doors bright and early.

The downtown lunch crowd eats late, so grabbing an early (1pm) seat should not prove too difficult at the bistro FELIX (340 West Broadway), tiny-but-terrific Greek treasure SNACK (105 Thompson Street), or shopper-friendly bistro ZOE (90 Prince Street). And if the weather is warm, head straight to LE JARDIN BISTRO (25 Cleveland Place) for lunch in their beautiful garden.

If you believe “eating is cheating” during a day of shopping, grab a quick bite on the run from SULLIVAN STREET BAKERY (73 Sullivan Street) and its neighbor the YOGHURT PLACE II (71 Sullivan Street). Or, if Cuban cuisine sounds tasty, stop by the neighborhood favorite CAFE HABANA To Go (229 Elizabeth Street). And for the sweet-tooth, CECI CELA (55 Spring Street) will satisfy even the most fierce sugar craving.

Come dinner time, SoHo really shines. The menu at PUBLIC (210 Elizabeth Street) brings the surprising tastes of Australia to New York, while the wood oven at PEASANT (194 Elizabeth Street) delivers modern day Italian classics. For truly adventurous fans of Japanese cuisine, reserve a table at OMEN (113 Thompson Street) - you just might catch a glimpse of Karl Lagerfeld dining with the fashion elite. For more traditional fresh seafood, descend the stairs near the Prada store to LURE FISH BAR (142 Mercer Street). New favorite SHORTY’S.32 (199 Prince Street) is packing them in every night with Creative American selections, while the cozy atmosphere of SAVOY (70 Prince Street) lives up to its Mediterranean fare. And for a really late meal, join the City’s local chefs at BLUE RIBBON BRASSERIE (97 Sullivan Street) - their spot for dinner after cooking all night.

Sleep: As you would expect, staying in such a dynamic neighborhood does not come cheap. The Mercer Hotel (147 Mercer Street) counts many celebrities and style icons as regular guests (and prices rooms accordingly). For a slightly younger, but equally fabulous crowd, check into 60 Thompson (60 Thompson Street) and enjoy the modern and tasteful surroundings. And, of course, the neighborhood namesake SoHo Grand Hotel (310 West Broadway) has earned a huge following with business amenities and the always popular Grand Bar & Lounge.

Spend a day (or week) getting to know SoHo - you will not be disappointed.

No Junk in the Trunk

You are so hard core - never skip a day. Your motivation and dedication have friends whispering about a possible “obsession.”

But the payoff is worth every hour spent pouring through the pages of W, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Elle, InStyle, Mademoiselle, and countless blogs. Fashion you know. And you trust Rowe.

Tomorrow, Rowe hosts its first trunk show of the holiday season, featuring two talented Chicagoans - fashion designer Lara Miller & jewelry designer Tina Daniel. Both will spend the day at Rowe showcasing exclusive pieces from their latest collections.

Lara has been named “Indie Designer of the Year” by Chicago Magazine and featured on Elle.com, DailyCandy.com, The Today Show, the CBS Evening News and WWD, among many others. Tina recently launched ConstanTina Jewels, a collection of innovative creations with a modern sensibility and cutting-edge, sultry designs. She combines rich metals with dazzling semi-precious stones in the most inventive ways.

Enjoy complimentary cocktails, meet the designers, and exercise your talent on some great new looks.

Thursday, November 8th from 11 am to 9 pm.
Rowe, 718 North High Street, Columbus, OH 43215

Gender Bender

Central Ohio gets a visitor this week, notorious for bending the gender lines.

No, it is not Michael Jackson. Or Alexis Arquette. Or even that guy who produced the Matrix movies (what’s hizzer name).

Think more literally.

The famous Pilobolus dance company comes to the Palace Theater on Thursday, November 8th at 8pm.

After amazing a worldwide audience with their performance at the 2007 Academy Awards, Pilobolus returns to Columbus to once again push the bounds of the human body and blur the line between dance and sheer acrobatics. More of an artistic collaborative than a dance company, Pilobolus infuses each performance with a sense of play and comic timing, continuously evolving and growing to stay at the forefront of modern dance.

Don’t miss their moving performance.

Wild Child

4am.  Remember when it was your bedtime after a crazy night out?  Now, not so much.

Kids, work, the gym, work, insomnia, work…. Being up at 4 am just doesn’t mean what it used to.

Relive the spirit of some of your wildest nights in the comfort of your (suburban) home with Inke’s vintage wallpaper animals.

The concept is wonderfully simple - vintage and vintage-inspired wallpaper hand-cut into animal silhouettes that bring any wall to life.  Each silhouette comes in a tube complete with a brush, paste and simple instructions and can easily be hung by an amateur.

Choose from the giraffe, lion, or croc patters.  Perfect for the kids room or any tired wall space.

The artist created the first wallpaper animal for her son’s room in the Netherlands.  Now, each one is hand-crafted in her workshop where the production also provides meaningful work for local adults with disabilities.

So, pour yourself a drink, turn the lights down low, and be inspired by your wild surroundings.  And remember, nothing good happens after midnight.

This Gift is a Natural

Leo Durocher once said “nice guys finish last.” Well, he never said anything about guys who are dressed to the nines. The right accessories can not only be fashionable, but a great conversation starter whether you’re at home, or with eight men out. And there’s no better way to say “Hey” with your wardrobe than with a piece of real baseball memorabilia.

Fans can now purchase authentic wood cuff links from some of the country’s most famous ballparks. Each is crafted from splendid splinters of the retired seats of a landmark stadium, set in solid sterling silver, and positioned at a 45-degree angle (like a baseball diamond, genius).

Choose from “The House that Ruth Built,” the home of the “Green Monster,” “The Friendly Confines” of Wrigley Field, as well as others.

Any brown-eyed handsome man would appreciate receiving these great cuff links as a holiday or groomsman gift. So assume the mantle of clever gift-giving this year, for a friend, or just for the love of the game. Either way, these links are in a league of their own.

In case you are worried they are juuuuuust a bit outside your price range, check out www.cuffart.com. We’re sure you’ll agree they are a steal - perfect for any outfit for the Mr. Cub or Mr. October in your life, even if he wears white socks.

Moc Me Now.

We all have moments we wish we could erase from our scrapbooks.

Remember that Madonna phase with black bracelets, a collection of Rosaries and plenty of lace? Or maybe those parachute pants you wore to private break dance lessons (thanks BGO)? Finally, do you really look at Pearl Jam concert pictures and say, “I looked great in baggy flannel and Doc Martins?” Probably not.

Thankfully, Flicker and digital cameras came later in life…

Smart preppy has never let us down. Timeless and true, its classic look never goes out of style.

Case in point, the moccasin. And nobody does mocs better than Quoddy Trail.

The Shorey family has been producing moccasins for generations, beginning with Harry Smith Shorey, a handsewer for L.L. Bean in the early 1900s. Thankfully, his family has kept the family legacy alive with Quoddy Trail. Based in Downeast Maine, the company makes traditional moccasin styles using time-honored techniques and quality materials.

Each process is done by hand — cutting, skiving, stitching, and handsewing. Better yet, all styles have full leather sock liners (not just half) and heel padding for added comfort and cushioning.

So whether you prefer the Bluchers, the Venetian, or the Ring Boot, you are definitely headed down the right trail.

See all styles and purchasing information at QuoddyTrail.com.

A Perfect Reason to Wine.

The end of summer. Holiday office parties. Turning another year older.

So many reasons to wine. But none as good as The Worthington Inn’s monthly wine dinner.

Acclaimed chef Thomas Smith carefully crafts an incredible seasonal menu the first Wednesday of each month. Then, the Inn’s wine pros pair each of the four courses with exceptional wines.

Their choices for the upcoming dinner on the 7th will make it a November to Remember.

The meal starts with a warm tartlette with wild mushrooms, goat cheese and arugula salad, followed by a risotto with shrimp, mussels, saffron and orange.

Ok, two courses down, two to go (halftime never sounded so good).

The entree features a marinated flank steak with black bean compote, jicama slaw and chimichurri sauce.  And for dessert, a spiced carrot cake with pumpkin mousse and grilled pineapple sorbet.

You will walk away not only utterly satisfied, but a bit smarter as well. The Inn invites an expert from the wine industry to attend the dinner and describe the details of each selection (this month from France and Australia).   All for a very reasonable and all-inclusive $70 per person.

So the next time you feel like wining, be sure to make a reservation.

The Worthington Inn, 649 North High Street, Worthington, OH 43085. Reservations for monthly wine dinner required at 614.885.2600.

About This Site

Hi, welcome to YouScoop!

I started YouScoop for very selfish reasons.  I have received countless emails and calls from friends, and friends of friends, asking for advice on where to go, what to do, where to eat, or how to buy.

I have always enjoyed discovering great spots off the beaten path.  And I am very fortunate to have the ability to spend time visiting a lot of great places.

With the launch of YouScoop, I can now provide anyone and everyone with the ability to learn about the latest trends in entertainment, restaurants and bars, fashion, the arts, travel destinations and more.

I always try to support local entrepreneurs in my hometown of Columbus, as well as anywhere I visit.  Many of the places and products featured on YouScoop will not be found in the mall.

You have a couple of options on how to get the scoop.  Our website, www.getyouscoop.com, will always feature the latest posting, as well as offer resources like a calendar of events, links to a few of our friends, and other cool extras.

You can also register for our free daily email digest.  Each time we post a new story on getyouscoop.com, you will receive an email with a highlight of the day’s information.  The email will also feature a link back to the getyouscoop.com home page.

Rest assured we will not sell your email address to the highest bidder (see our privacy policy).  Occasionally, we might write about something for which we are compensated.  When that happens, and it won’t be very often, we will be sure to let you know.  Otherwise, all the things featured in YouScoop will be the opinion of the editorial staff.  We do not operate a “pay-for-play” system.

Thanks for visiting YouScoop!  Please register for the free daily email digest and forward the site to your friends and colleagues.

Eye Eye, Captain

Charting the waters of fashion requires a keen eye.

Add vintage to the mix, and only the most seasoned veterans will survive.

Fortunately, the fashion ranks of Greater Columbus have a very capable leader in Captain Betty.

Captain Betty’s, a small shop located in the heart of downtown Delaware, offers an astonishing selection of vintage clothing and accessories for both men and women.

Gals will find fabulous furs, impeccable formalware, handbags, jewelry, hats and much more.  Labels range from couture to catalog, depending on the piece.  And shoppers can step all the way back to the 1930s, or take a quick jump back to the totally awesome ’80s.

For the gents, two smaller rooms in the back of the store

Euro Stash

Vacationing in Europe might prove difficult this summer.  After all, filling the SUV’s tank for one month now costs more than a plane ticket.  Not to mention the fact that the exchange rate is about as competitive as the Idol finale.

But die-hard shoppers need not fear - two European retail legends have entered the world of e-commerce.

Paris’ trend-setting Colette recently launched a brand-worthy website, offering a wide variety of products for sale, as well as information on exhibits, music and much more.  Visit www.colette.fr.

Meanwhile, for lovers of all things English, the venerable Fortnum & Mason store will now ship to our shores.  While fresh foods from the amazing Food Hall cannot make journey, plenty of other favourites, including their luxurious hampers, will certainly spread cheer.  Visit www.fortnumandmason-usa.com.

Clicking is SO the new skipping (across the pond, that is).
